so i recieved a large amount of money from a school from a combination of a scholarship and need-based aid. it was large enough that my tution, books, and fees were covered. my question is should i send a thank you letter. i feel compelled to becasue of the amount but is it appropriate?

Is there a specific financial aid officer that assisted you along the way? If so, a note to that person might be appropriate. It's a very nice thought. Was the scholarship the result of a donation by a specific person or group? That also might give you an idea about whom to write. If none of the above apply, a general note to the financial aid office thanking them for their assistance would probably be fine. I've never heard of anyone doing this before, but I do find it charming.

see that is the problem i'm not quite sure which scholarship i recieved. the letter solely states you recieved such and such from our scholarship program so i was not quite sure. and all i can say is that this is derived from my southern manners.

Zack...will you be attending that school? If so, you might include a note with your acceptance info stating that the scholarships and aid you received made it possible to accept their offer of admission.

If you don't plan to attend, you can put a short note in your letter to them stating that you appreciate their generous financial aid offer, and thank them...but have chosen to go elsewhere.

It's very nice that you're thinking about a separate note, but I don't think that's necessary. Plus these offices receive TONS of mail at this time of the year.
