Does admissions send CDs to the music department to review? I couldn’t find any information about it on their site. Thanks!

When I talked to admissions about this, they kind of discouraged seding CD's and such, but they said that the proper prof of music would review it.

All right, good. Thanks! :)

i heard the consensus at most schools was to never send CD's unless you're like top 5 national in your instrument, or whatever. only if you'll be "recruited". they say for admissions that "if you're good, you'll have won local, state, and/or national awards and we'll see that on the app to realise your talent."

essentially, if its just to impress admit peeps its a bad idea, but if you honestly think the orchestra (teacher? conductor?) will hear it and "recruit you", then maybe.

that make any sense? do you music people think that sounds right, or am i way off?

I am at the level to send a CD. I also do not play any competitions.

again, idk anything about this. i just heard the above secondhand, and made some assumptions about it.

so how do you know you're that good?

I agree I am at the level to send a CD too, but I think my awards are self explanatory

guys, you realize the level i'm talking about is

A) playing on npr
B) top 3 in a nationwide competition

Notice that I never said that your level was the correct one. The top five people on any instrument are going to be going to Conservatory. No exceptions. However, I would guess that I am one of the top five or so people applying to non-Conservatories on my instrument. I am at the level where I could have easily gone to Conservatory, and though I decided not to, I am still expected to become a professional.

ok. thanx for clearing that up for me (honestly, the music thing is quite beyond me). but yeah, then a CD would be appropriate...although it might have been wiser to send it in about a week ago, to make sure the instructors "pull" was already attached to your file by the time they went over it. especially considering you have no competitions (still doable, easily, of course)

-btw, not to impugn your talent, or anything. there's just a lot of damn fine musicians out there. some know it. some don't

-btw 2: what instrument? do you mind?

Yeah, I'm too lazy to send things early. I'm still writing my Why Penn? essay! lol

I'm actually not going to tell you my instrument just because I like to keep a modicum of privacy around here! :)

edit: this doens't mean I can't get in easily, though! schools don't usually know who's good at what and at what level without awards or competitions.

secrecy about the instrument you play, thats crazy, but anyway, i would classify myself in the same are as you corranged

at least tell me what pieces you are sending?

Not the same ones as you are. :)

Thanks for being sooo specific...I don't any harm in telling your instrument, but from your attitude, I would say you are a trumpet player

Not even the tiniest bit close. ;)

ahhh...its one of those asian female violinist then, gosh

Do you seriously want to guess? I just don't want my specific information saved on the Internet for anyone to see.

But, no on the race and instrument, yes on the gender. lol
