I just have a quick question... when I was doing my application I couldn't figure out which engineering I really wanna be working on, so I just chose Mechanical engineering because I thought it was like a basic engineering. But now, I decided to go for a biomed. Is it easy to change your major to biomed?? I am just worried because I just heard that some schools only admit students for biomed when they apply as a first year and don't accept any transfers from other majors...

Also, I am thinking about majoring in Biomed and following a premed course too.
Reason is that I am just not 100 percent sure about what I really want to become later on..
I narrowed it down to doctor (hopefully a neurosurgeon) or an engineer (biomed or electrical). I will try to decide my dream before the end of first year so that I am not confused when I have to apply to a major in my second year. However, I just heard that it is harder to keep GPA high in Engineering school than in college of arts and sciences.. I hope it was just a rumor... but is it true that Engineering school is harder for students to get good grades??

Also.. do you guys suggest me to just major in neuroscience, biology, or chemistry if I were going to a med school? or is it okay to just stay in engineering school even though I decide to go for a med school?

Thank you everyone for reading my boring writing.

I don’t think putting Mechanical Engineering as an area of interest counts as declaring a major, in which case you don’t actually have to change your major. Also, you can major in whatever you’d like for med school. Use your first year to figure out what interests you the most! Good luck!

Are you a first year next year (class of 2015)? If so, the major you put on your UVa application is just an expressed interest, you don’t actually choose which major to declare until the end of your first year, so don’t worry about that at all. If you’re finishing up your first year and want to change your declaration to BME, you should people search and email Kitter Bishop.

Engineering is a great way to do pre-med, though. Meeting premed requirements as a BME major is pretty easy, and I remember Professor Guilford from the BME department saying at one of their majors nights that BME has a much higher admissions rate to medical schools than the average, since its such a strong program.

Hello, I just wanted to know if it was possible for me to change my school from CLAS to SEAS. I though that CLAS would be right for me because I originally wanted to do Astrophysics but I’ve changed my mind to Aerospace Engineering. I detest English classes, and I saw that as being one of the requirements for undergraduates!!! No way is this school right for me…ive always been a tech. guy and Im so worried that I wont be able to change my school anymore…please help somebody!!

Yousaf, have you done summer orientation yet? If not, when you go, register for the first-year engineering classes (talk to the Orientation Leaders during scheduling about this). They change them everyone once in a while so I don’t know the specific ones, but that definitely means taking ENGR 162 and a few other engineering prereqs. If you’ve already done orientation and enrolled in college classes, you can switch your registered classes to the Engineering prereqs when Open Enrollment starts on August 1. Call the engineering undergraduate office to find out what specific courses you need to take.

In terms of actually transferring your registration between schools, you can’t do that right now, but you can apply to transfer after your first semester. Once you get to UVa, go to the Engineering undergrad office and ask them how to do that. There is an application process.

Switching to the engineering school isn’t going to help you avoid English, though – all engineers are required to take four writing/discussion classes (first year, second year, and two fourth year): [Department: - Science, Technology, and Society - University of Virginia - Acalog ACMS?](http://records.ureg.virginia.edu/preview_entity.php?catoid=17&ent_oid=956&returnto=276)
