I'm a high school student, and I was planning on taking either CLEP or AP exams (not paid by school) to test out of some classes. And I'm planning on majoring in either computer science or engineering, so I was wondering if the credits that aren't relevant to my major will be counted towards my BA? I know it varies from school, but I was wondering if generally it would or wouldn't count?

AP or CLEP scores might give one or more of the following, depending on the school:

Credit units. I.e. you may need 120 semester credits or 180 quarter credits to graduate, and the scores may give you credits for that.

Subject credit. I.e. they count as fulfilling some major or breadth requirement.

Placement into more advanced courses. I.e. you may start in a more advanced course in college. It would be a good idea to review the college’s old final exams for the courses you may skip to ensure that you know the material from the college’s point of view.

Whether they count for one or more of the above depends on the test and the school. You need to check each school’s policy.

Because so many of your credit units are specified for major or breadth requirements for engineering degrees, AP or CLEP scores that do not give subject credit or advanced placement may not be very useful, even if they give credit units.
