Quick Question about Majors

Hello. Just wondering.
1) Can you double major within Columbia College?
2) How easy/hard is it to get such a schedule approved?
3) Does the Core Curriculum make it difficult to complete all the credits needed to double major?

Thanks :)

Yes

You don’t really need approval

Probably

I’ve worked out plans with double majors and with majors and concentrations and whatnot, and it’s not too difficult as long as you’re willing to take 5 classes almost every semester and don’t mind be judicious about how you select your electives. Also, it depends upon the majors, because if both majors require lots of courses, then it might be tough. If it helps, the core does take up about 15 classes out of the possible 40 (if you take five classes a semester). This is less if you complete the language requirement by exam or placement test (drops to 12) or if you fulfill the science requirement with a course or two of your major (I mean, in this case the core class wouldn’t “reduce” the number of classes you can take for your majors, because it would be a class for you major). So, the core can be anywhere from 10-15 of your classes, and I’ve seen majors range from ten classes (English) to thirteen or more (Bio), but still, mathematically it’s definitely doable.

how hard is the courseload if you major in Econ?

not all that hard, if you’re halfway decent at math/science sort of analytical stuff.

Econ majors at Columbia tend to be more ambitious than they are brilliant.
