This question is for MIT but also apps in general..

Should I send my SAT score only, or should I also send my ACT? It seems like my ACT compared to SAT is slightly lower so would sending it hurt or help my app? or does it not matter?

Just send in your SAT score (your ACT is equivalent to a 2250, so it won't hurt or help your app; your SAT score is better anyway). This way, you (or your parents) save $8.50 per school. Schools only need to see one, and most applicants send in just one or the other.

It seems like their contractually obligated to say they don't prefer one or the other, but in reality most schools do. Usually whichever one they receive more often is preferable.

I'd like to see some evidence for that statement. I saw with my own eyes and heard with my own ears the Yale admission officer who spoke in St. Paul on 1 October 2007 say that Yale has no preference, period. (Yale used to have a preference, but these days all the highly selective colleges are very welcoming of scores from either major brand of test.) What college shows any sign of really having a preference? Is there ANY college that flat out won't accept the minority brand in its region? (I think not.)

It's also possible to look at the situation this way: there are only two main brands of tests (in the United States), and an admission office will rapidly become familiar with what scores make sense for offering admission or not on either test, in light of what else is in the application file.
