I know that Michigan has an endowment of $7.8 billion, but does this $7.8 billion include the endowment for the specific colleges such as $375 million for engineering and $540 million for Ross, or is it actually a much larger endowment when all of the colleges are combined?

It’s all of the colleges put together.

The endowment includes those of the Medical School ($1.3 billion), College of Engineering ($375 million), Michigan Law School ($720 million), Ross ($540 million) and LSA ($750 million). I expect a certain alum to double, or even tripple, the College of Engineering’s endowment in the future. ;)

Approximately half of Michigan’s endowment belongs to general funds while the other half belongs to the individual schools and colleges, mostly to the 5 mentioned above.

Most universities are set up that way. For example, of Columbia’s $7.8 billion endowment (identical to Michigan), $400 million belongs to its Business school, another $1.3 billion to its Medical school, $900 million to its Law school and another $400 million to the Fu Foundation (Engineering).
