Quick Question: Are Discussion Classes Required?

Hi, I signed up for Intro to Chinese Arts, Culture, etc. It's a GE class. When registering for it, it never said anything about signing up for a discussion class. Some of the other classes required the student to register for both a lecture and discussion class, but there were some that allowed one to register without signing up for a discussion class. So my question is, are discussion classes required even if it doesn't say anything? Any help would be great! Thanks!

Check the syllabus, it might be on blackboard by now. Chances are that its required as most will have an impact on your grade.

Whenever you see a class like EALC 145g where there is a lecture section and a bunch of discussion sections following it, it means everyone registers for the lecture but then breaks out into smaller groups for the discussion section. In this case you must register for the lecture and one of the discussion sections also.

You’ll notice the total number of seats available in the discussion sections (6 x 25) equals the number of seats in the lecture. If the lecture section was 175 seats then you’d see a 7th discussion section available.

Sometimes there will be multiple lectures and a ton of discussion sections. Usually you register for one of the discussion sections immediately following the lecture section on the list.

Ok thanks guys! My professor posted that discussion classes are required. What do we even do in discussion classes? I heard it’s the exact same as the lecture

Discussion sections are usually taught by either the professor or by a TA which would usually be a PhD student. It is a chance to discuss what was taught in lecture in more depth and detail. It is really hard to have a group discussion in a class of 150, but much easier in a room of 25.

Oh ok, thanks a lot Kulakai! Helped a lot :)
