I'm sure this is a trivial question, but it's been on my mind for a while haha.

I failed a calculus course about a year ago, and since then I've retaken it and gotten my GPA up. On the UC application however, how do we insert a failed/retaken grade or course? I've just started on the filling-up portion of the application, and this just came to mind.

it’s not a **good **thing to retake a class but if you did better your second time around they will obviously view that better than doing poor in the retake.

and the original class that you screwed up on is on your transcript so one way or another, they’ll find out

did you do a academic renewal sort of thing?
where you go to your schools records office and ask them to pull out the D/F?

(of course this would be reported on the app when transferring but it is excluded from the GPA calculation … unless your school factors in ALL grades including D’s & F’s)

No no, I didn’t do academic renewal; I just retook the class and got a B in it, though I’m still worried it’ll look horribly bad.

The story behind the failing grade is one of personal family matters and my own inability to drop the class properly. Once I realized I hadn’t dropped…too late, the drop date had passed. Completely my fault to have not realized, but I still feel rather bad considering it was a stupid mistake on my part -_-

Exactly how would I go about explaining that on a personal statement? I think it would look bad, but eh.
