Quick question - need responses Sunday

My D will hear back from schools the end of March / beginning of April. She just received a notable honor on Friday. Would it be worth it for her to send a copy of the press clipping to the schools to which she's applied, or do you think they're too far into the admissions process?

My son sent an update in. It was a little earlier than this time last year, but if it is a notable honor, I'd send it in.

Well, the worst that would happen if it's too late is that it wouldn't be considered. There's really no downside to sending it in.

Send it. It can't hurt.

Fax it in first, then send by mail. If it is really major, then it may make a difference. If it is too late, it may just go to the "disregard and discard" pile. Of course, it may not make a difference since she probably already has the credentials and this honor would fall under the category of "expected".

Also from what I have heard recently, they may already be aware of it if the school has your D in their database and gets "google" updates. Yes, search engines have found another way to make money.

I agree w/ atf4ever, if it's really notable, fax the information. I suggest that dd follow up with a phone call to the admissions office and politely ask if they received it and request that they include it in her file for consideration (adcoms seem much more likely to respond to polite candidate requests)

atg4ever - You have a good point; she was chosen the county's top student from among the top students at the other county HSs, but the award is based on credentials that are already part of her college apps.

Congrat's to your D! Yes, I think she should send her newpaper clipping in. It is probably too late ... unless her application or (or merit scholarship) has landed in the additional discussion pile. Then, you just never know. Best wishes!

By all means SEND IT! I did something similar for my D. I don't know if it made any difference, but later I spoke to an MIT adcom, and she said that the horse-trading among the committee, with applicants coming on and off the accepted pile, continues right up until the notices go out. She said some of them had their acceptance letters all drafted and signed but were pulled back in favor of other candidates. You never know what will be the tip in favor of your kid. Send it.

Overnight it! The extra pennies are well worth it, and use tracking so you can be sure the committee receives it.

And email your regional reps: Just a little note -- thought you might be interested to know that I was selected the best whatever etc.

Then all your bases are covered and you bring the rep into the loop. We did this numerous times as DS was getting various awards at this time.

He had gratifying results.

While they may have already made a favorable admission decision for her, the addition to her application may sway them toward scholarship (or more scholarship if they've already granted her one) monies.

If it is something really major (national level) - send it. Even if her app was reviewed they may re-review it. If it is less important - wait. They will not re-open her file for a county-wide award now. So it will be a waste. However, it can help later in case of a waitlist. You will need additional awards then.

After my S1 was accepted EA to his school but before merit scholarship decisions were made, his class rank/gpa went up. We sent a new transcript in showing the new info. We figured it couldn't hurt.

Definitely send it. It can't hurt and may help.

We had a similar situation with child who applied SCEA a few years ago. Called the school to ask and was told that decision had already been made so it wouldn't matter.

However, if your daughter prefers not to call the schools, then fax in or email with scanned copy as attachment and follow up with hard copy. Certainly couldn't hurt.

Thanks all - following the consensus opinion, we faxed it to the 8 schools this afternoon. Interestingly, only 6 of the 8 have their fax machines turned on over the weekend!
