Hey guys, I want to transfer to NYU to attend the Gallatin School of Individualized Study, but I have a bit of a problem. We all know how expensive an NYU education is, and even though it is my dream school, and am determined to go there, no matter what, it is pricey, and I do want to go to grad school. So here is my question for all you Gallatino's or others who might think they can answer my question. I was accepted into an Honors College at a local college here in FL. It's a two year program, and they actually pay for me to go there at no cost. In fact, they pay me about 3G's a semester in my pocket to attend, which would save me two years of paying NYU tuition. Here is my problem: I know Gallatin has alot of school-specific credits, and my worry is that either some of my credits won't transfer (an NYU counselor hasn't given me a yes or no answer yet), or that I'm going to have to make-up alot of credits either in the NYU Summer Term, or that I'll miss out on all the opportunities that NYU and/or Gallatin has to offer (such as internships, etc.). So now I don't know whether I should stay at the Honors College for the full two years, or transfer out after one. Any advice guys? It would be MUCH appreciated. Right now I'm lost, and don't know what to do. This affects alot of stuff, so I would like to try and plan in advance. Thanks again, you guys always steer me the right way :)

Will you have to take out loans for NYU if you go? What's your major and your career aspirations? If you're going to be over 140k in debt and major in English or something, it isn't worth it. Make sure your education is cost effective.

I agree about not doing a common major at NYU. I don't think that I would do it if my major was education or something. But my "major" at Gallatin would be a combination of music business, radio (communications), journalism, public relations, advertising, music recording and production, and maybe even some art history. I want to mix things up :)

That's cool that you're interested in a lot of things but....don't you think you should focus on just one or two things? You'll barely be able to touch on each of those, won't be able to get in depth on anything. And NYU has to approve the majors in Gallatin don't they? I wouldn't think they'd go for something like that at all....

Why don't you just apply to Clive Davis again next year instead?

I thought about applying to NYU under the music business program or the clive davis program but I found two fundamental problems: The music business program has too many core music requirements. While I know that they are needed, and are very valuable, I think its a bit much. The clive davis program on the other hand, requires a portfolio, which I don't have at all, and I am not really interested in becoming a producer as a sole career, and thats what the program primarily focuses on. What I like about Gallatin is that it lets me meddle in several aspects of the music industry, including promotions, public relations, radio, publishing, and more and enables me to find my niche, while the other programs emphasize one specific thing. And, it allows me to start doing internships for credit immediately, rather than having to wait until my junior and senior years. Primarily though, I will be following alot of the same curriculum that the music industry classes are focusing on, but also mixing in some of my other interests. And it doesn't hurt that Gallatin has its own record label and has more scholarship opportunities than the other two schools. And, at NYU, we're gonna need all the money we can get, don't ya think? Haha :)
