If i applied as Undeclared Letters and sciences, when, if possible, can i declare my major so i dont have to take bull s*** classes? I heard a rumor that i can call UCLA and declare it over the phone but Im not 100% sure. btw i want to switch from undeclared to Bio/Psych. THanks

i was wondering the same thing, and who do you call

why do you think anything is stopping you from taking the courses that you want?

um...

you go to the dept youre interested in switching into, fill out a form, and youre all set. changing majors isnt that big a deal...most people do it in their first quarter at any college anyway.

i dont think bio/psychs impacted, but if it is, you might have your work cut out for you.

what happens if its impacted

"when, if possible, can i declare my major so i dont have to take bull s*** classes? "

Like a poster above said, nothing's stopping you from taking non-bs classes. Being undeclared doesn't restrict you from taking bio/psych classes, and by the same token, being declared as bio/psych doesnt restrict you from taking BS classes. You can take any classes you want. Declaring your actual major doesn't really matter right now. You can switch away from undeclared anytime you want. You can switch now or you can switch after a few quarters, it has no bearing on the classes you can take. A lot of incoming freshmen don't really understand that.

thank you, i will call

Can I declare business/econ first quarter?

Can I declare business/econ first quarter?

Have you looked on the business/econ web page at ucla? Clearly answered there.

"Can I declare business/econ first quarter?"

If you mean actually being in the biz-econ major, no. You have to take a series of pre-req courses which you can find on www.econ.ucla.edu. Based on your GPA in those pre-req courses, you are either admitted or denied to the major. Most people finish their pre-reqs and officially apply around the end of their sophomore year.

Ok, thanks. So, if I take all the reqs and then I am rejected from biz/econ, will I need to take more pre preqs to declare another major?
At least some, right? How far behind would I be for a major that's not very similar to biz/econ? Thanks.

For the people that are rejected from biz-econ, most go into regular econ. It has a much lower GPA requirement.

If you were to switch to an entirely different major, yes, you would need to take more pre-reqs. As for how far behind you'll be, it depends on where you are in your undergraduate career, and the length of the major that you're switching into.

how is the economics program at ucla? is it top ranked or pretty good?

There are no undergrad rankings of departments. The graduate econ department is well-respected nationally.

It's up to you, when you get here, to decide whether you like it or not. From my own experience, I can tell you: all the different econ majors are very popular, so classes are very large all the way through, even upper divs. It can be hard to get individual attention in such an environment; you'll definitely have to be actively seeking it. Of course, this is true of a lot of majors in a university as big as this one, so it's not an econ-specific issue.

There are some brilliant professors, but a lot of them are primarily research-oriented and not very good at teaching. The quality of the econ TA's (they are all comprised of grad students), on the whole, are simply not very good. Many are foreign and have bad accents when teaching.

This can sound like I'm being negative, but on the whole I've enjoyed my experience here. But again, you'll just have to find out when you get here.

brandnew2 writes about the large class sizes. You can see them by going to the online schedule of classes. Undergrad classes are courses numbered 199 and below. See http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/detmain.asp?termsel=06S&subareasel=ECON
for econ Spring 2006, and http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/ for looking at other majors

UCLA Economics is definitely top-ranked.
