I'm just about completely set as far as transferring goes. I've met all my pre-reqs and have plenty of E.C.'s, and a nice GPA but I only need one math class to fulfill the IGETC. I'm planning on applying/transferring to UCs for next fall.

So as I said, I only need one math course to complete my IGETC. I could have taken either intermediate algebra (M05) or pre-calculus (M07). I was told by my counselor to take pre-calculus, which I did. I am on of those who struggled with even beginning algebra (M03), but I passed. Now I am having a lot of trouble in pre-calculus and worried about what to do next. I have been trying to decide whether to drop the precalculus course and get a W (which would be my first and only W) and take intermediate algebra course next semester in the spring, but I'm worried if that would be cutting it too close since I'm applying to transfer in the fall.

My other option is to just try to get through the current precalculus course, but honestly I wouldn't have even made this post if I felt confident enough that I thought I could get through it (even with C). I am studying like crazy and have spent a ridiculous amount of hours in the math lab for tutoring. I know that ideally I should have finished all my math courses a long time ago, but I didn't. Please help!

Well one thing I see as a problem. I really don’t think INTERMEDIATE algebra counts it could be called that at your school and mean something else but Intermediate is Alegbra 2 stuff which is not a college level math class. College Alegbra and Intoduction to Functions are college level math courses. Just be sure that it actually fulfills the requirement. I know at the CCC I got to you cannot take precal until you take trig and intermediate alegbra and UCs dont take trig or intermediate alegbra.

I would really focus on figuring out why you are doing poorly. Is it your arithmetic? do you not understand the functions? Once you figure that out you will be golden. I use to be horrible at math I’m in precalc right now and honestly I can say that I am extremely good at math now. I figured out my problem, arithmetic, and grinded in down into my bones, 4 hours a day for atleast 4 weeks.

Statistics might have been an easier option for you.

Haha wow my bad. I meant College Algebra (which is M05). Only 5 units are needed for that particular area, and the lowest level course is M05 (College Algebra). In retrospect I probably should have taken statistics. In any case, my first question still stands. I’m not quite sure what to do or how badly it’ll affect me and/or my chances at transferring.

It’s not the material itself that I find hard to understand, it’s the memorization. Having to memorize an entire chapter or two and every variation of each formula is difficult. And I do study, I study quite a lot. And while I can manage to memorize some of the forumlas, it’s not always enough to cover an entire two chapters (much less even one in some cases). I’ve completed every homeword and do a lot more on my own just for studying’s sake. I’ve been spending a lot of time with the tutors available on campus and doing whatever I can. Anyway, I can usually get by alright but in this particular math level I am having some real trouble, hence why I’m re-evaluating my plan of action.

If it were me, I would take the W (if you are positive you will receive a grade below a C) and contact the UC’s that I applied to and tell them your updated ‘planned’ courses you are taking in the spring (perhaps College Algebra). I know how you feel. I am in the same boat with my math class at the moment and if things were to go sour, that’s what I’d do. I’m in Stats btw.

But before you abandon this class I would talk to the instructor and tell them you’re having trouble and seeking an immense amount of outside help. Some teachers will take this into consideration when assigning final grades.

Yeah you would’ve been way better off with College Alegbra imo! just get a W and take college alegbra it should be fine.

Thanks guy. I can’t tell you how much better I feel knowing this. That said, I have until like some ridiculous date to drop with a W (like mid/late November or something), so I’m definitely not going to give up yet. And good suggestion, I will have a chat with her about what’s going on. Thank you so much again guys.

I think you should drop it and go with a W if you know you’ll get a C, because C’s bring down your GPA so much (trust me, I would know). Besides, it’d be your first W. I’m in some program with UCLA and a girl who’s our mentor said a couple of W’s won’t hurt, as long as you know how to justify them, because life does happen. Anyway, keep trying and if you know you won’t be able to pass, drop it.

GOOD LUCK! : )

Take Introduction-to-Statistics (srs)
It’s easier than College algebra!! It rarely uses algebra, it uses basic math like adding, subtracting, dividing, and etc. It is a must math class for those struggling in math

Wow, I really appreciate all the responses going on here! Would it hurt my chances by taking the class so (what feels like) last minute? I mean I’d be applying this fall for next fall, and taking the one and only course I need to fulfill IGETC. But I’d be taking said course in the spring.

Would anyone happen to know?

I’m taking transferable Stats and a Physical Science (W/O Lab) in the Spring to finish IGETC along with 1 History class. 10 units total.

You’ll be fine if you take transferable math the Spring before transfer.
