I have this terrible tendency to do better (much better) during my 2nd Semester "B? classes than my 1st semester "A? Classes. For instance, the first semester of last year, I ended with a 2.8 ish UW, 3.3ish W, while the second semester I managed a 3.8 UW, and a 4.5 W.
Anyway, apart from the rollercoaster gpa, do I have any reason to believe that this will hurt my application?

The up and down pattern isn’t going to get noticed – what will get noticed is your culmulative GPA – which you know, could be better. Best of luck to you.

A lot of people seem to place a lot of emphasis on grade trends. Is upward trend somewhat overrated?
