Just really curious. i want too go to school for engineering, and im goin to look at some colleges soon, and a few on the list are stonybrook, uiversity of rhode island, amherst, bu, northeastern... which would be the better pick, im primarially concerned on location, like beach? college town? beauty? prestige? -thanks for your time :)

and wpi, sorry just forgot to mention that

BU’s in the best college town, and University of Rhode Island is probably closest to a nice beach… Northeastern’s Co-Op program would probably help get you a better job right out of college though, and that’s valuable these days.

Multiple engineers have posted that prestige doesn’t really matter when you’re going for an engineering degree, so long as the program is certified by the ABET.

Northeastern and BU are both in the world’s greatest college town, while Stonybrook is not. I’m assuming that by Amherst you mean U Mass, and not Amherst College. U Mass is also located in a “college town” but it’s much more isolated than either BU, Stonybrook, or Northeastern. I’m not familiar with URI though.

Btw, which schools are your safeties? Which schools (if any) on the list are you in-state for?

stonybrook is the only new york college that is in the queue.

*Multiple engineers have posted that prestige doesn’t really matter when you’re going for an engineering degree, so long as the program is certified by the ABET. *

Pretty much true. Virtually all get hired at the same wages no matter their school. Salaries my vary by company and region of the country. Company A pays all new engineers the same, but it pays more than Company B. Company C pays all new engineers the same, but it pays less than Company A because its location is in a cheaper COL area.

339…what can you afford? how much will your family pay? What state are you in? What are your stats?

@mom2collegekids: cant afford like over the top schools like Harvard or Stanford, but we can afford the average schools. I live in new york. I have like a 3.7 gpa havent taken sat yet, i pkay soccer, and i coach, and do counseling at the summer camp as being part of the community.

?

If you can’t afford Harvard or Stanford, how can you afford Northeastern, Amherst, and Boston University???

Do you think that they cost a lot less???

Please ask your parents how much they’ll pay each year.

have no clue, which would have the best financial aid?

My point is that all of those privates (Stanford, NEU, BU, H, Amherst) all cost about the same.

However, you said that you can’t afford pricey schools like S & H, but you can afford “average” schools.

“Average” privates cost just as much!

S & H give the best aid, however, NONE of those schools will give you great aid if they look at your parents’ income/assets and determine that your family can pay most/all costs. There are many kids at HYPS that don’t get ANY aid…so just because those schools give “great aid,” is NO guarantee that you would get what you want or think you need.

the schools that give the best aid are also the very hardest to get into.

What are your test scores and GPA?

How much will your parents PAY?

im hopin to get good financial aid since only one parent works. and only thing i can give you really is my gpa, which is about a 3.8 i take my sats soon.

if your looking for academics
Amherst is your best bet
BU is by far the best out of your choices for social options and college town
considering the social landscape is the most important thing to me I would choose BU

thanks, exactly social life and enviornment is hugeeee for me, like a beach in rhode island or the city of boston, is what i look for, then i see what the good colleges are there

The fact that only one parent works is irrelevant. There are many families that have only one parent employed but they don’t get aid.

Aid is based on INCOME and ASSETS…it’s not based on how many parents are working.

If your dad earns a lowish salary and they have little assets, then you could get a lot of aid. If your dad earns a good salary then you may not get as much aid as you’d like.

How much will your parents pay each year for college?
