Quick Question

Hey eveyrone! I'm a senior this year and it was recently pointed out to me that Tulane's application is now up. I was wondering when was the earliest anyone had heard of them turning over a decision was?

Earliest I have ever heard is first week of October. Will be interesting to see if anyone says they heard earlier than that.

They notify of acceptance prior to the date of 12/15 that is noted for EA applicants?

In the past, yes. Although Tulane does not call themselves a rolling admissions school, they have often sent offers of admission and merit scholarship awards within a few weeks of getting the application. This assumes that the student A) is obviously qualified and B) appears that they are seriously considering Tulane and not just applying because it is free and they need a “safety” school.

This was part of Tulane’s approach to attracting top students. When a student that might be more strongly considering Vanderbilt, Duke, WUSTL, or other highly competitive schools would get an offer from Tulane along with, perhaps, a $25,000 merit scholarship offer, and get that offer in the middle of October when they know they will be waiting at least 2 more months to hear from these other schools (and perhaps longer), that student is naturally intrigued enough to look into Tulane more seriously than they might have otherwise. Often they will even schedule a visit to campus. As has been related here anecdotally numerous times, that often results in Tulane moving way up on the student’s list, even over these aforementioned schools in many cases, though they might get accepted to them in December or April.

Of course the past is not always prologue. Given the large entering class sizes the past few years, Tulane may take a different approach. We just don’t know. They only promise a decision by Dec. 15.

I applied at the end of September and was given a decision (acceptance) less than two weeks later! Also, Someone from high school got their decision the second week of September. I’ve noticed that with Tulane if you apply early your chances of acceptance are slightly higher.

My son plans to apply for Early Acceptance. His SAT scores aren’t as high as he’d like and he will be taking them again in October. Do folks suggest waiting until those scores are back and applying closer to the 11/15 deadline?

ExeterMama: The admission to Tulane is holistic in nature that is to say they take into accounts a lot of stuff not only just the SAT/ACT scores. The most important thing is to write a good essay like Why going to Tulane? etc. Here are some tips for you:

1) If the application asks “Why are you applying to [insert school here]?,” take the time to write a thoughtful, insightful answer. Show you have done a little research, and really make your case as to why you think said school would be a good fit for you. If there isn’t a question like this on the application, then send in a short paragraph as if this question was asked. Tulane does have an optional statement that asks why you are applying- fill it out!

2) Explain everything! If you had a real tough semester in your personal life in your sophomore year and your grades suffered, let us know. If AP Calc wasn’t your thing but you got two tutors and worked every night for two months studying but still got a C, let us know. The more insight you can give into your grades the better.

The blogger is Jeff and he is the Senior Associate Director of Admission. I hope this will help you and good luck. May the Force be with you.

Okla2012, thank you very much!! My kiddo has already drafted his why Tulane essay. He took lots of notes during our campus visit in June. I will make sure he reads the blog while he’s working on his app!

That’s actually really cool. I’m thinking of applying to Tulane and that might make it a lot more likely. I don’t want to apply until after school starts, but if I submit it around mid september, would I be able to get a decision within a few weeks? like mid october? Or does this only apply to kids who get there applications in really early, when the admissions office doesn’t have much to do?

Can only tell you what it has been like in the past. But if it holds true this year, a mid-September app from a student that is clearly qualified and appears to truly be considering Tulane should hear by mid-October. Now that assumes that your entire app is in their hands, which means also test scores, recommendations, transcripts…Did I forget anything? Anyway, if they have the whole package by then, given the above assumptions, you should hear back within a few weeks. Mid-September is still really early. Early October is even still pretty early.

IIRC, my D got her app and all the other “stuff” in around October 3-6, and got an acceptance with the Presidential Scholarship around October 20. This was 3 years ago so a little fuzzy on the details, but it is about right.

BTW, the admissions office always has a LOT to do, lol. But no question some weeks are a lot more hectic than others. But they don’t sit around the office when the apps are just starting to come in. They are planning and taking trips throughout their areas of responsibility, hosting information sessions. You should absolutely go to one in your area if you can. You can find the schedule on the admissions office portion of the web site once they have their dates set, and you can also get on their e-mail list so they will let you know whats happening.

Admission visit to our area is the first week in October. I think DS will draft the optional essay before that and see if he wants to add anything after he hears the talk. Since we probably won’t have class rank till October anyway, this might work out.

Do you think we would still hear by Thanksgiving?

Depending on the number of apps they get, I would think you would hear by Thanksgiving.

Like FC, my s heard back pretty quickly. He would have heard sooner but they apparently had 2 separate app files set up on him and it took a while and several phonecalls on his part for them to realize they had two half-completed folders on him. Once they put the 2 together and confirmed that they had, he heard back in 3 days!

My D applied on 10/10 and found out on 10/24 that she was admitted. They don’t notify you via email, you have to check online. 10/24 was the first time she checked so I don’t know if the decision was there earlier or not.

That’s a good point mumof2. Just to add to that, the online notice does not include any merit award you might get. That only comes in the snail mail, and eventually shows up on a financial aid page or accounting page that they create for you once they give you a password to see your account. I think they set that up once they have accepted you, even if you have not told them yet if you are attending. I am not really sure about that though. They only started that last year, they didn’t have it when my D was accepted.

Oh, and the online notice also does not tell you if you are invited to be in the Honors Program. That is also in the snail mail letter, if it applies.

Thanks everyone for the responses, they’ve been helpful as I began the process.

I figured I would pose this question here to avoid cluttering the forum: how long should the ‘Why Tulane’ essay be. For my reasoning, I can write one paragraph or an entire novel haha. Just need to know how long they’re expecting it.

Don’t they suggest a limit? If not, I would say no more than 500 words.
