Quick question?

What do you think would be better?

A straight 7 year med program at a local state university. Or traditional four years premed at a prestigous school like and IV or IVesqe school?

Here's the catch the state school is like right next to my house. My parents said I could dorm but I think its too close. I like the idea of goin away and going to a damn fine school.

and advice?

Look around at some of the other postings in this section...to make a long story short, you may do better at a HYPS-type school (because of the grade inflation) than you would at the state school (because people at the state schools tend to be less studious and that'll rub off on you, in a decidedly bad way-even though the state school might be easier overall). However, at a grade-deflated "good school" (Caltech, MIT, Cornell, U Chicago, Berkeley, Johns Hopkins etc, etc) 1) you'll be killed by the harsh and ruthless grading and 2) the med schools won't give you the benefit of the doubt for having attended a harder school...which means you'll never become a doctor.

Keep in mind also that if you ultimately never make it to med school, a bachelor's from HYPS or any other school mentioned above will likely be much more valuble than one from the state school.

I say if you get accepted to a 7yr. program, you should go, even it is a not-so-prestigious state school. Ultimately, the prestige of the medical school you attend will not make much of a difference in your success as a doctor. With the difficulty of medical school admission these days, a guaranteed acceptance is priceless. Of course, if you think you will be miserable at this state school, don't go just for the program, your happiness should count for a lot. Definitely think hard about it though.
