Quick question.

Hi, I'm currently taking prereqs @ local california community college for Physician Assistant (PA) school in the future. I'll be taking the majority of them here, but I'd like to be able to take my General Chem I&II courses @ a 4 year school. This would allow me to be finished after Fall 2014 w/ CCC with 75 transferrable units- and since Spring transfers aren't usually admitted, it will give me a few months to volunteer, shadow and establish some health care experience needed for PA school until Fall 2015.

Would this be feasible? I'm not sure how the transfer process works, or how 4-year schools work - if they work differently than CCC. General Chem would be my last lower-divison prereq for PA school, then I can take some upper division classes along w/ my Psychology major courses.

Thanks in advance.

Hey there:)
First off, PA is a good choice career. Nice… btw I am a Biology major at a CSU, so this is strictly from my knowledge as a CSU student.

To answer your questions, most CSUs (including mine) take in transfers for the spring semester ONLY on the basis that they have obtained their AA degree. It’s great that you want to volunteer and shadow someone for some experience, but I would make sure that you see the counselors at campuses you want to transfer to so they can answer these kinds of questions so you don’t make a mistake and end up wasting a whole semester. Remember, you can always gain that experience later. If you talk to your department, then I’m sure they are also able to accurately answer these questions as well.

The CSU and UC system are great, its just that usually, the Chem classes are the first to go when registration for classes start (Especially chem I and II). I cannot stress to you how difficult it is to get into those classes. Competition for classes is really competitive, but again, it could be different on other campuses. The competition drives me crazy though.

If you are able to obtain the Chem class in that CC though, TAKE IT. What you may also do is take a Chem course during the summer. Just a warning, it is a 14 week course squished into 6. All my brother did was eat, sleep, ****, and study for 6 hours a day. He got an A though so it was well worth the sacrifice. It was an intense 6 weeks. Those credits are transferable to a 4 year (credits are credits). Get it out of the way. Chem especially, requires A LOT of focus, precision, if it pertains to your major. If you must, take a Chem preparatory class.

Usually in the 4 years, you must take an exam and pass it in order to register into the Chem courses. Or you may take a Chem preparatory class if you feel you are less prepared in order to advance. It looks like this—> either take the exam and go into Chem I, OR… take Chem4A(Preparatory class), take exam, then ChemI. Don’t waste your time if you know youre not gonna put in the effort to pass a five unit class.

My high suggestion to you is to schedule an appointment with a counselor in this department. They have the best answers, but I hope this helps you with a little knowledge on transferring and the five unit classes.
