Quick Question

I intend to major in civil engineering and I’m looking at RHIT.

Why is the acceptance rate so high??

Being the number one school where doctorate is not offered, RHIT ranks above HMC and many others.

If I may, can someone chance me? Im definitely applying here most likely early action even though I only have 10 days left, but will apply RD if I have to. Good thing the essay is optional, or is it recommended?

GPA all weighted; 9th-2.9 10th-4.1 11th-4.5 12th-4.73 => shows improvement and yada yada
Received A+'s in all my AP, honors math/science courses from 10-12th grade.
SAT-not hoping to submit but 2090 (800 in math)
ACT- 33C (32E 35M 30R 34S 28Essay) My STEM score was a 35.
SAT II’s-havent received but Im sure i got a 800 in math 2 and a ok score in physics

Excellent Recommendations from my STEM teachers, and an glowing one from my counselor

Class rank is low, but omitting my freshman year will get me in the top 15 of my class of 170.

Pretty good EC’s
-President of my organization for a few years
-200-300 hours of community service
-4 years of art => portfolio for my civil engineering major–for only some schools.
-other clubs and activities
-received many awards for doing service (civil engineering-based) in Africa.
-Maybe nothing OUTSTANDING but yeahh

Does the 60% acceptance rate apply to me as well? Am i good candidate for this school? I love math and science, especially physics, and I hope they can see that.

I live in California so I am checking out UCLA and USC and cal poly SLO and pomona. But this school sticks out.

haha, one last question.

Is there anything wrong about RHIT. I read some forums and they said they loved it, but why don’t people apply there? I mean, its a 58% acceptance rate and its an awesome engineering school. Is it the financial aid? I really don’t know. Any info from someone applying there or a graduated senior will be awesome. Thankss.

I would say that your chances of acceptance are very good, but I’m not an admissions officer. I think you should apply EA since it’s non-binding.

I think one reason that people don’t apply there is the location. I enjoyed my time there, but Terre Haute is a bit dumpy if you grew up in a big city. I grew up in a small town so for me it was a step up.

Well i live in southern california, so i can see your point. And i must admit, im working on the essay as we speak so it will be rushed but i hope rh still accepts me. Thanks for the help.

You have a good shot!
My older D is at Rose and absolutely loves it, but the younger D wouldn’t consider it. Her cons: location (small, rural town), size (smaller than high school), 75%male (poor diversity), and no easy access to high-quality music (her second passion to engineering). The cost is also an issue for some. Though Rose’s merit and financial aid is very good for a small, private, some for whom cost is a major factor find better offers elsewhere.

Wow, so money and location and those other factors come into play the most for this insititution? I know rh is expensive but most privates are. Thanks for the input

@ikim16 - My D at Rose chose it for the education quality, challenging but supportive learning environment, small classes, professor accessibility, etc. and she didn’t mind the location or size. As I said, she loves it. The other D still wanted a great engineering school but those factors I listed above in post #3 were also important to her. She ended up at UMich and loves it. In my opinion, they are both getting great educations, but neither would be happy at the other’s school. FYI, both were stellar high school students.

Thats great!! My sister went to umich actually. Thanks for the input. I hope i get accepted.

My son had similar stats to yours and is a freshman at Rose. Because we’re from Southern California, Harvey Mudd was his first choice, but as you known the acceptance rate is much lower at Mudd. One big advantage at Rose is that they accept AP credit. My son started with 33 units and a large merit scholarship. He wouldn’t have gotten either of those things at Mudd.

@TwoSue how many AP’s did he take? I didn’t take so many, totaling 6. I live in Socal as well, and HM sounds great but is Rose just as good?

I think he also had six APs. But he also did the full International Baccalaureate diploma, which added more credit due to those exams. I don’t know how you measure “just as good.” HM is one-fourth the size and more selective, so it may just depend on whether or not you get in. Since my son didn’t get in, he was thrilled to be able to go to Rose, which many consider the “HM of the Midwest.” He is paying much less due to his scholarship and is almost a sophomore after one quarter. Also, keep in mind that Rose will help you get a job when you’re done… their job placement rate is something like 98%.

Great for him!! Tomorrow is the due date for the EA, and I’m going over everything I have. By the time you read this, ijt will be turned in!! Thanks for the input. What others schools was he accepted to? I just want to get a feel of how Rose compares to other schools around us.
when i say just as good, im comparing it to other top engineering schools
also, i recently received my subject test scores: 800 in math 2 and 710 in physics. Retaking physics but I dont think Rose accepts these scores. When i screenshot my sat, I ll include them hahah

if you can, please let me know how hes doing. Im wondering because we come from similar environments? did he by any chance go to troy high school? thats the only ib program i know of in socal.

So far, he likes it there. He will be home for the first time for quarter break at Thanksgiving, so I’ll get more information then. We don’t talk very often, he’s busy with school and friends. He was also accepted to UCSB, UCSD, Rochester Institute of Technology, Colorado School of Mines, and University of New Mexico (that one was just to get an acceptance early). He didn’t get into Berkeley, Rice, MIT, Olin, or Cal Poly SLO (that was a surprise). I think he loves Rose, especially the small size, but it’s hard to be so far from home. And soon there will be winter… Things to consider!

As with any school, you will want to visit before deciding for sure to attend. A lot of students love Rose, but it is a largely Midwestern student body, and there isn’t a lot to do around campus. As a SoCal kid, you will want to check it out in person if it ends up on your short list at the end of admissions. (I have a Midwestern kid at Mudd now, and she attended the Operation Catapult camp at RHIT a few summers ago).
