is the analytical writing placement exam for the UCs difficult?? im kinda worried about it

Are you talking about the Subject A exam? I never had to take it in the university setting, but I did take old actual prompts as practice exams in my AP English class junior year and my honors english class my sophomore year that were graded by an actual UC grader. They don't seem difficult at all, especially if you're taking an AP english or have taken an AP english exam (Subject A's are a joke in comparison). In my sophomore year, the old prompt we had was something about ants I think and how they use teamwork or whatnot and to write an essay about teamwork using other examples (real life, literary, etc). My junior year the prompt was about rewarding students and its consequence on others who weren't rewarded and wheter materialistic or verbal rewards were the way to go (and again write about this with support). The prompts were very basic and written in podunk language, no hard reading at all. They give you plenty of time (something like 3 hours for one prompt?) and this shouldn't be something you lose sleep over. Just remember to read the prompt carefully and address it without digressing. The UC proctor, when she came and had a Q&A session, suggested that what we did with the prompt was underline what exactly the prompt said to look for and box the verb within the underlined part (usually no more than one line). Not necessary but a helpful visual to keep you on track from digressing or if you need a quick refocus on what you need to write about. Good luck.

thx so much for the suggestions...hope i can do well since english isnt really my best subject...

is there any way to get out of the exam? (passing ap english exam , high sat II writing, high sat I verbal....?)

or does everybody have to take it no matter what?

you have to have a 680 on the SATII Writing or a 3 or higher on the AP English test

babiblu where did you get this info? is this the same for all UC's? I have a 740 in SAT II writing and I got a 4 on the AP English Language exam. So I'm exempt?

oh n/m i found my proof! http://www.ucop.edu/sas/awpe/requirement.html

yea it's the same for all UCs so you're exempt

ha ha....i got a 680 thank god
