Quick Question...

I was accepted into the College of Liberal Arts for Psychology (BA), if i were to want to change that to a BS instead what would the process be? And what is the main difference? I am planning on taking the pre-med track so i am starting to wonder if maybe a BS would be more appropriate...

Also, how do you go about adding a second major and/or adding a minor? Is it difficult because each school has limited spots? If i want to add a major or minor do i need to contact my academic advisor before it becomes complicated?

Thank you!

It is very easy to add another major or a minor in the College of Liberal Arts. You just take the classes required. Majors in CLA generally do not have “limited spots”

This shows the difference between a B.A. and a B.S. If you want a B.A., take the classes needed for a B.A. If you want a B.S., take the classes needed for a B.S.
I think that it is not easy to fit in all of the pre-med requirements plus a double major; that’s a lot of classes.

Psych B.S. is the typical track for psych majors with pre-med. The pre-med track results in a minor in Biology, but you don’t have to add it as you do an official major. The main difference is that the BS requires less semesters of language but more natural sciences courses - the Psych Undergrad Office and website (that Midwest linked) have a BS with pre-med reqs planning guide available. Make an appointment with your psych dept advisor (just call the office, they can tell you who yours is if you don’t know them already) and you can meet with them, change to the BS and add a double major if you want.

Thank you very much guys for the quick responses and great information, just for a little clarification, if i were to double major i would most likely want my second major to be something from the business school, how would that change things?

As a non-business major, you are restricted as to the business school courses you can take. (They probably do this to prevent someone who was not admitted to McCombs from using this as a backdoor to get into the business school.) However, there is Business Foundations for non-business majors:

There was a recent thread that discussed its merits.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-texas-austin/928942-business-foundations-program.html?highlight=Business+Foundations</a></p>

That is interesting, but i could have sworn that I have heard of people with 2 majors from different schools (ie Natural Sciences and McCombs) am i mistaken?

Its possible to have majors in Natural Sciences and McCombs, but you would have to apply to McCombs, maybe through the transfer process(?) if you were not admitted as a freshman. You would have to complete Calc I and II, Econ I and II and have 24 hours in residence when you apply.

I’m in McCombs and COLA. But I applied for both of them during the initial process. I’m guessing you should “transfer” to McCombs after a year there.

Also, there are two cross-school programs that I know of, a COLA economics degree called the Business Economics Option Program
[UT College of Liberal Arts: Business Economics Option](<a href=“Economics | Liberal Arts | UT - Austin”>Economics | Liberal Arts | UT - Austin)

and the “engineering route to business” program that lets business students have something like a double major or minor in engineering.

I just found this.

wow thanks odyssey, that was just what i was looking for

Lol no problem. I love the McCombs website because everything is so clear and organized.

I also plan on applying to the honors program (plan II) for my sophomore year since i didn’t this year, in your guys’ opinion would adding a second major on top of that and the pre-med reqs create too rigorous of a schedule?

Many people who major in Plan II also have a second major.

I also suggest meeting with an advisor from the Health Professions Office - they can help you plan out courses, provide information on various medical schools, and have statistics on successful med school admissions per major at UT so that could help you narrow some things down.

Plan II is not admitting transfers now. I’m not sure if its ALL transfers or just junior/senior transfers.

I’m doing a BS in psych and going the pre-med route! Look on the website and make an appointment with your advisor if possible so you can be informed on what specific classes to take and such!
