If I apply to universities as a music major, does this mean that I'll have to audition and this will be evaluated as a part of my application, or is it simply used as statistical information? Thanks!

Piece of cake. Easy answer. It’s clear as mud. ;)

Most college, university BM/BFA programs require an audition (and/or portfolio submission for composition); there are BA programs where an audition is required, and some where they are not. Some BA programs will admit musically without an audition, and allow you to audition into the BM during sophomore year. Music education is normally an audition/academic/interview admit.

Music business/tech/production programs are a bit different. Some require an audition, some do not. Depends on the shool, and program focus although there may be audition and non audition variants at the same institution.

In the BM/BFA scenarios, the audition is a significant, if not decisive factor in granting admission, providing the candidate’s academics meet or are borderline for academic acceptance.

In the non audition BA variants, the academics weigh more heavily.

If you want to provide a list of schools, intended music pursuit it would help a bit if you want specific clarification.

Strict conservatories (Juilliard, MSM, NEC, etc.) are for all intents and purposes are solely auditioned based.

I am not applying to any strictly music schools. I will be applying to mainly Ivy League / top private schools in addition to UVA, and will either major in English and minor in Music or vice-versa. I also really like Cornell’s Computing in the Arts program which makes it rank highly on my list.

Hi Rupert–the kinds of programs you’re mentioning do not require auditions for admission. Outstanding achievement in music (meaning, accomplishment in music at essentially the national level) can contribute to a picture of well-roundedness that tips the scale on your behalf.

N8 is right.

Just be careful in thoroughly investigating the specific policies and procedures at each, as they will vary considerably in terms of lesson policies, ensemble opportunities. While it doesn’t address your needs, you may want to run through this http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/893213-dads-condition-giving-me-tough-time.html as an overview to some of the Ivy programs. There are plenty more similar discussions here as well, as well as a number of posters at or with experience in these programs.

You may also want to take a peek at Oberlin’s Timara, and search for past posts by kmccrindle, whose son is at UMich in a similar multi-faceted program. My recollection is that both of those however are audition centric admits.
