Quick read- Would really appreciate thoughts?

im currently a freshman at a small private school right outside Manhattan. It is a good school but under the radar a bit. I play a varsity sport there and after the end of my first semester i believe i will have a 3.8-4.0. My high school gpa was pretty low (2.6) but it was a very very good prep school. My SAT scores were okay 1310 (M-750, R-560, W-570). Im planning on retaking them. My mom went to UVA and it is in-state for me. I know that the upward trend helps but since my high school grades were so low. Am i wasting my time trying to apply to the College of Arts and Sciences Pre-Commerce at UVA for my sophomore year? I will finish my freshman year with 31 credits.

Thanks for your time and hopefully wisdom

i suggest waiting another year, because even though you went to a good prep school, your HS gpa is still really low.

I think you should try it out; you have nothing to lose. And if you don’t succeed, keep working at it and try again the year after that. I don’t understand what’s the harm in putting something in now.

Your CR & WR scores are well below the 25% range for accepted fr:

And, the transfer rate at UVA is about 25%, vs. 37% for fr:

IMO test scores are more important when attending a CC or a lesser known school as it helps to put your gpa into perspective.

Yeah, but I feel like the OP can retake the SAT or do the ACT.

^That’s my point, particularly as a soph transfer applicant.

thank you for your thoughts. Currently I am at a tech school getting a pretty general business degree. I want to recieve something more specific in either finance or accounting, aka the reason for transfer and UVA is the most desirable. So having said that, I can not take some of the required classes or equivalents that UVA asks for, such as a foreign language. I was considering transfering to JMU with the hope of transfering to UVA from there. I would be able to take classes that would easily transfer over and fufill UVA’s requirements. However, transferring twice might not look attractive and tranferring into McIntire junior year is very challenging. Any thoughts? I really appreciate the help.

transferring twice is generally looked down upon, so if you can get in your first shot, do that. make your app as strong as possible. good luck

Not really sure where you’re getting that from. I got into a super-selective private the first time around, and several other super-selective privates after doing one year at the school I got into the first time around.

What were your reasons for transferring flowerhead?

Would transferring to JMU to take the right classes and then transferring to UVA be a good enough reason?

that’s the general rule, it’s not the same for everyone, but for the most part schools don’t like to see you transferring more than once.

Again, I’m not really understanding where you’re pulling this “general” rule from. But it’s humorous to see you assert this with such authority.

That’s a good enough reason. My reasons were worse: I wanted a better intellectual life, wanted a better social life, and I didn’t think my school was giving me either at the time. After I got in to some more great schools, I had a tough decision on my hands. I realized that, at the end of the day, it’s going to be just as hard (if not harder) to make friends and to find my intellectual niche as a junior transfer than it would be sticking it out for another two years at a school at which I had already spent a year. I decided to stay put.

Now that I’m out of school, I can say that I don’t regret my decision at all.

and i’m not really understanding why you think that i would say something for no reason. also, just think about it. doesn’t transferring twice seem a little odd to you? anyway, just help the OP and if you disagree with something i say, then just give your own advice without ragging on me.

i wouldn’t suggest transferring twice. can you take required classes over the summer before going to uva? that way you can stay at your school but also get the classes you need finished.

You first say that there’s a reason behind what you’re stating, and then you don’t give it…

Well in my opinion transferring twice does seem a little unusual, but at the same time it seems like if you have enough reason it could be done. I have thought about taking the required classes over the summer at NOVA CC. I could do that. Part of me however feels that if i take those classes and do not get into UVA as a junior i will be even more disappointed. I am looking for a different college life from the one I am in now. It kind of goes hand in hand with the academic reason. I believe that most likely I will be applying to UVA (just to give it a shot, not expecting acceptance) and JMU (will be expecting acceptance, brother went there). JMU’s business school is little in comparison to UVA’s but it is still a top 40-50 business school. I would be socially happier than now, however it would academically be a step down to the school I am at now. The starting salary and job placement from the business program at my current school is exceptional. $58 K avg and roughly 85% recieve job offers. They are not an accreditted business school though, and these numbers are because of these career development office and connections with NYC. It’s a tough desicion in my opinion. I would be happier at another school, but unless I could get into UVA or a very good business school. I believe that I would recieve a better career oportunity from my current institution. and when I look at it like that…well I think maybe UVA for Grad School.
