For those who have auditioned at Rider, the e-mail that confirms the audition says not to use sheet protectors for the sheet music. Did you tape the music together accordion style, have it in the binder with no sheet protector, or just loose pages for placing on the piano?

Good catch BethsMom! I’ll ask D what she prefers when she wakes up. Each piece she is singing has at least 4 pages I think so I’m not sure which would be better. Have to copy yhe music if she decides to tape it…why do schools have to be different? This is D’s 5th audition and the first to request no sheet protectors.

MTMAJOR and Songof6pence, what did your sons do?

D taped the pages back to back.

I’m guessing the lighting in the audition room is such that reflections are a problem for the accompanist.

If you can copy the music onto card stock and tape it, it will lie better on the music rack than fluttery copier paper does.

S doesn’t use sheet protectors. His music is copied front/back. He punched holes in the margin. His audition music is in a small 3 ring binder, the cover is hard so it sits up easily. So far there hasn’t been any issues with turning the pages. This binder has a place in the front to hold his headshots/resume so he always has extras with him. The rest of his music is the same way but in a much larger binder. He carries both with him.

So far of the 4 auditions, only Point Park asked him to adjust a song. The gave him adjustments to his ballad (Johanna) and asked him to sing the entire song. So he took the entire song from the larger binder and worked with the accompanist to re-position it. He said it wasn’t a hassle and they were ready to go in minutes.

D rolled her eyes and taped the sheets. Of course she knew what to do, what was I thinking?!

Ha, cellomom51, our kids are immersed in the theatre life and we forget just how much they actually know already! But it makes us moms feel better to gather as much info as possible, doesn’t it?

Sometimes we do know better. My S is auditioning for Interlochen tomorrow & was happily putting music in sleeves today. I told him that I read (here) that sleeves cause glare & back to back copies would be better. He disagreed, but looked it up to verify… I won! LOL!

Geez, I guess we’d better make a set of sheet music that is taped together. FYI, you can get non-glare sheet protectors at Office Depot/Max & Staples.

Hi cheeseheadmike - we do have non-glare sheet protectors but these particular instructions said “no sheet protectors” so we figured we should follow that.
