I'm getting ready to apply to Pomona, and I have the application complete. However, I've written two supplements (one for each prompt). One is about my commitment to service and a pretty unique program I was a part of where we interviewed local non-profits and made a final $10,000 divided among three organizations. My other one is a response to the "what have you done that's just been plain fun" prompt, and talks about my experience as an extra in a Kevin Costner movie playing Kelsey Grammer's son. I like the second essay a bit better, but I also briefly talk about this experience in my short extracurricular common app essay. Would it be too redundant to have my supplement talk about the short essay topic in much more detail, or should I use the essay essentially outlining an meaningful community service experience?

I’d do the fun one - I talked to an admissions officer and he says that those are the more enjoyable essays to read and reveal a lot! It’s also a nice break since everything else is so serious.

This may no longer be possible since I applied two years ago, but I had multiple versions of my common application to deal with this kind of thing. It is definitely not a good idea to repeat yourself in two of the essays.

I would do the fun essay. It will allow them to further understand who you are as an individual. I also agree that your two essays should not discuss the same topic. But if you’re simply elaborating on a topic briefly mentioned in the first essay then it shouldn’t be a problem. Plus the essay is “optional”. Not to say that they don’t expect you to do it, but I don’t think they’re going to throw out your app over an essay about fun.
