Quick Survey: Did you submit SAT or ACT?

ACT: 4
SAT: 8
Both: 5

ACT: 4
SAT: 9
Both: 5

ACT: 5
SAT: 9
Both: 5

Jersey13, the whole reason I started this thread was because I am extremely suspicious person by personality. I saw that same statistic and I figured a statistic put up by the college board has to have some sort of hidden bias because it is in their best interest to relay favorable SAT information. If we can get about 30-50 total responses we can get a better idea just how true that statistic is. I am not saying it’s an outright lie but something tells me 4% is just too low.

30-50 responses chosen without randomization would somehow give you an accurate representation of a ~30,000 applicant pool?

I actually think 30-50 responses here would be sufficient to draw some conclusions on. CC doesn’t seem to attract one geographic region in higher proportion than Harvard does, and this thread’s title doesn’t disproportionately attract senders of one particular test. In addition, the total population size does not affect what sample size is appropriately generalizable.

ACT: 6
SAT: 9
Both: 5

But even to get a 30-50 people sample size, you’ll have to remember to turn back to this thread again in May and figure out who have admitted and, most importantly, who’re matriculating.

ACT: 6
SAT: 9
Both: 6

Nonetheless, it is inconceivable that you will obtain any resemblance to the “true” statistics because this is college confidential. Many here take the SAT AND the ACT and also do not share the bias of their environment or let it dictate which test to take. Many students do not even know if there exists a parallel test to the SAT or ACT. Many also never take the counterpart because they feel like they shouldn’t if their peers aren’t. Since this is college confidential, a place where the top students of the country come, these factors become nonexistent and do not affect any statistics taken here.

I agree with silverturtle. AvisMath, if that is truly the case then let us take a statistic of the best of the best who come to this forum and vote on this thread. After all, in that case this statistic will still have significance even if it is solely for determining what the top students choose. If there are people who apply to Harvard that have really never even HEARD of the ACT’s existence then they are probably of little significant value for our college admission concerns.

^ Most of the top students in Harvard’s applicant pool do not use CC.

Please link me to where you learn such important information.

Go look for the number of IMO/IPhO members, Siemens/Intel Finalists etc. in the decisions threads.

The grand prize winner of the 2010 Siemens contest is a CCer. He/she was accepted EA to Caltech.

ACT: 7
SAT: 9
Both: 6

It’s a he, and he told me friend he only came on to post his stats, lol.

ACT: 8
SAT: 9
Both: 6

Ok I realize that it has only been 23 responses but seriously this is nowhere near the claimed 4%. And yes, I know there are biases for asking on college confidential but as far as we’re concerned, this is about 43% off from collegeboard and that can’t be solely because this poll is on collegeconfidential.

Unless the next 192 people specifically vote SAT over ACT this thread will not reach the 96% vs. 4% that collegeboard claims.

I think the truth is obvious enough. I’m not accusing collegeboard of lying, I’m sure that statistic is 100% true in the obscure context that they are failing to tell us and I don’t blame them. If I was the president of a “nonprofit” organization called collegeboard (take note of the quotes), I too would use any statistic to make incoming test takers believe that they will alienate themselves on a stranded ACT Island if they choose to not pay for my “nonprofit” testing services and opt for my rival. It’s called monopolizing, people. I’m sure Harvard applicants know this already.
