I think you should reply by May 1st to one college (accept Stanford lol) and then if you get in from the waiting list and want to go to MIT, then withdraw from the college you replied to (you will possibly lose the deposit money etc.) and go to MIT!

They won't know how many places they'll have until after May 1 when they hear from the admitted students. Do accept somewhere else. You may lose your deposit, but I don't think MIT has one, so maybe it evens out?

yeah someone, ur encouraging me too. Stanford EA deferee and MIT waitlistee. Colleges just like to put me on hold i guess....losers. And Ben, you didnt see that.

hehe someone, i'm in the exact same situation. Fortunately I decided I wanted to go to Stanford no matter what about a week ago. Made the waitlist note a lot less harsh. :D

oh yea, lake, I think I remember you from the Stanford boards once or twice! nice, nice. congrats! I'm leaning towards stanford myself (it's getting harder to see how I could conceivably prefer HYP), so I may see you there....

mcortex88, just to be clear: If you're waitlisted somewhere, there's no guarantee you'll be offered a place, and you won't hear until after the national reply date. If you indicate your willingness to stay on the waitlist, they'll keep you in the running for slots that open up. You do, however, need to accept some school other than your waitlist school by the May 1 date, and this means sending that other school a deposit. If you hear mid-May that your waitlist school can admit you, you have a choice of accepting the waitlist school's offer and losing the deposit at the other school, or declining the waitlist school. (I think that made sense...)

I think you may lose your deposit. I hear it's about $300 for CIT, about $200 for UCs (the only other schools I applied to). I think you lose your deposit to the school you chose to attend on or before May 1st. Oh, and who knows maybe MIT won't be your top choice by late May (don't burn me for heresy please...)
