Quinnipiac University - Any Questions for a Student?

Hi there,
I recently was accepted to QU..but do not know much about the school. I come from a white/conservative/wealthy town outside of harrisburg, pa. I am planning to visit the school in march but i do have some questions..
How visible is the female/male ratio?
How far away is New Haven?
How far away is QU from the ocean? Any beaches?
Is QU a suitcase school?

Thank you so much!

cbound,
I too have been accpeted to QU, and plan on majoring in communications. From what I have heard, their communications department is top notch, plus their nationally known for their polling system for major companies (cbs, nbc, fox, msnbc). Although, i am not quite sure whether i plan on going there..i still have to hear from other colleges. I am planning to visit this march, I have heard it's gorgeous..it's just so expensive!! What do you know about QU? Any decisions yet made regarding the college choice?

campus is very nice, dorms have an upscale log cabin feel. Main room w/ kitchenette and cathedral ceilings and lg plasma tv........dorm rooms sleep 4 but room is enormous! ( this is Dana hall anyway) each kid has there own corner complete w/ bunk on top and own desk and dresser underneath, they ea have comp set up and cable tv set up for themselves.Still leavin plenty of room for a couch and chair in middle of the room! Quinn requires all students to have laptop and then all campus is hooked up to the same net. Repair and instruction courses for the laptop are included. Communal style bathrooms...gender seperated by floor.

Pond and covered bridge w/ lots of wooded areas lend a rustic feel yet plenty of traditional coligiate looking buildings and open courts and grassy lawns and a clock/bell tower. Decent food and cafes..visited the Bobcat and main cafe.

Comm program looked fantastic...Charlie Rose visited and many other news and celebrities. The sleeping Giant Park is across street and you can see mountain from all areas of campus.

academically looked like Occupational therapy and health fields were excellent and Communications and law school which is part of Quinn all highly reccomended. as well as teaching and business.

The school in Ireland looks great and all intl abroad opportunities looked promising. there is a May carnival that the kids all talk about that sounds fun.

My D is hoping to get a scholarship and would love to attend. she is goin up for the april open house. Anyone else goin?

New haven is about an1/2 hour south from hamden( Quinn) Female male ratio is about same as all schools more girls than guys. From the ocean? Not sure....i know New Haven ferry is about 45 min

What kind of housing is available off-campus for seniors? How difficult is it to find? Do you need to go 1/2 hour away to New Haven to get affordable off-campus housing?

from what my d's boyfriend who is a freshman there tells us....seniors are not offered on campus housing but the school is looking to correct that. presently most seniors find housing in the surrounding areas of hamden in apt complexes etc. But apparently when the dorms were built the school built them extra large knowing that they would eventually put more freshman together and then be able to bring senior housing back on campus. Like i said the dorm rooms are really enormous sleeping 4 with way extra room. The plan he tells us is to put 6-8 kids in the room as freshman thereby making room for the seniors. Even w/ putting 6-8 kids in a room there would be plenty of room still in the rooms i think. But he says this is all in the planning stage....so we shall see. In the meantime freshman get to enjoy all that extra space!

Seniors are not allowed to get on-campus housing. When do they plan on putting 6-8 in a room? Also, if they can do this, why aren't they doing it now? How is off campus housing in Hamden, if you know? Is it affordable? Is it fairly safe?

I wonder how freshman will take hearing that they have 5-7 roommates in the years to come.

Actually that rumor is quite wrong. Quinnipiac is currently expanding across the street where they're building the brand new hockey and basketball arena, with a goal to create a campus for more upper level classes and a graduate school program facility, as well as MORE HOUSING. As a current freshman living in a four person dorm, it would be physically impossible for them to put 2 more people in these rooms.

Housing off campus... What is available is very nice, however some people view it as expensive, but when you put it in prospective of paying $10,000 a year for room and board, it actually proves to be the better deal! I met a girl who was living in a very nice house with 4 other girls, and they were each paying $500 a month, which is equivalent to less than $5000 a semester!

Any other questions? : )

Thanks Jewls. Will there be senior housing then? If so, will it be guarenteed, made available by lottery, or what will be the process, if you know? When does it look like construction will be complete?

I am so glad to hear that 6-8 are not going into one room. I don't think that is a healthy way to live, and I wouldn't want to be in that situation.

I'm also very interested in learning when senior housing will become available. For my D, this was the only major drawback to the college, since otherwise it seems like a great fit for her. Although I do agree that many seniors who already have cars may find it easier for them to live off campus. For us, we would have to plan on buying her a car (preferably with 4 wheel drive given the locale) to get back and forth to her classes on campus, which is another added expense to the other costs of college.

merlyphillie, We have the exact situtation too. My son does not have a car.

Northeastmom,

The Quinnipiac web site under residential life has listings of off campus housing both privately owned and owned by QU.

Also, this article from 2005 has some other suggestions: <a href="http://www.quchronicle.com/media/paper294/news/2005/12/07/Lifestyles/Searching.For.OffCampus.Housing.Not.As.Hard.As.It.Seems-1122875.shtml?norewrite&sourcedomain=www.quchronicle.com%5B/url%5D">http://www.quchronicle.com/media/paper294/news/2005/12/07/Lifestyles/Searching.For.OffCampus.Housing.Not.As.Hard.As.It.Seems-1122875.shtml?norewrite&sourcedomain=www.quchronicle.com</a></p>

Maybe Jewls can verify this, but there was (probably there still is) a QU shuttle that went to New Haven at night, and possibly to Hamden shopping centers.

My link didn't print, and it looks like you have to register for the QU Chronicle. The article was called "Searching for off campus housing not as hard as it seems" from Dec.7, 2005 in the Lifestyles section.

Thanks Scuyler. Yes, I have read about the shuttle into New Haven on CC and I have heard about it. I have heard that it is pretty good.

Sorry I didn't mention about the shuttle previously. Quinnipiac has shuttles running every 50 minutes into Hamden and New Haven. New Haven offers quite the extensive night life opportunities, and a very safe and reliable transportation system!!! In New Haven can often find yourself surrounded by not only QU students, but Yale, University of New Haven, Souther Connecticut University and Sacred Heart. It is the "happening" spot on Thursday-Saturday nights.

In Hamden there's tons of opportunities to go shopping: Walmart, Stop and Shop, Shaws, Marshalls, TJ Max, Old Navy, Gap, Staples, Bed Bath and Beyond, Modells, Payless, Bon Ton, Nine West Outlet, Blockbuster, and the list goes on... Eating places include Applebees, Fridays, Chilis, Panera, McDonalds, Subway, Burger King, Wendys, and Chinese Buffets. Plus various hair salons and tanning salons.

I'm not quite sure when on campus housing will be available for seniors, or if it will be guaranteed. I know that QU bought houses surrounding the new campus construction area to make more housing availabe as well. Just remember also that some seniors come senior year might not even want to be living on campus and are more then ready to share a house, condo or apartment with their friends!

Here's the link that explains the new rec center, i don't remember the exact date it's supposed to open but maybe you can't find it on the website! <a href="http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x10981.xml%5B/url%5D">http://www.quinnipiac.edu/x10981.xml</a></p>

Does Quinnipiac offer single-person dorms to freshman?

Nope... There's four different freshman dorms. Two buildings triples (3 people two a room) and two buildings are quads (4 people rooms). I currently live in a quad and I love it!! There's so much space that allows us to even have a big sized futon. People who live in the triples really like it there too because they get really close to everyone on the floor. Either way, you end up loving the dorm building and situation you're in.

i know it is true that some freshman may end up in a room with 6 ppl. I visited a friend with this dorm situation and she loves it. The room is HUGE...and were previously "lounges" so there is more than enough space. They were actualy much nicer in my opinion juxtaposed with the quads. The only downside to this is if you are a person who would not like to live with 5 other girls....and where i was staying there was a lot of girl drama. So just a heads up...it is possible to be put into one of these rooms..and not by choice.

Im headin up April 1st for the Open house, Ive already been up (to visit my cousin) but I want to take a tour and learn about something other than a dorm room and a toilet... haha.

JerseyBoy,
Hey, I am going up to the open house on april 1st too...this will be my first time going up.. there's a good chance that i will be attending QU next year. What about you? Are you attending next year? What are your impressions with the school?
