Quirky Majors

Okay, I was checking the "Why do YOU want to go to UChicago" thread and found some talk about Indiana Jones and Kurt Vonnegut and the anthropology major at UChi. I was curious, how popular is this major? I come from a bit of a rubbish high school that didn't offer intro classes for such a subject. What exactly do you do in that major?

What I mean to ask in general, what are some of the more quirky majors a person can take, not only at UChi but at other institutions? What kind of jobs are available for Anthropology majors? For Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations majors? For Gender Studies?

I dunno, I just thought those were such general yet focused areas of study that it would be hard to know exactly what you're gonna do when the four years of UChicago is up.

people with those majors need to go to grad school.

i am doing intensive language study in NELC.. 4 out of the 8 or so student's in my class are phD students.. NELC is great, but you can basically go into academia (or maybe work in a museum if you don't want to do grad school).. or maybe be a linguist like another person in my class..

Wow, Nada. I must say that 8 students in your class is pretty small. There were about 25 students in Beginning Greek last year, but the numbers fell drastically as the weeks went on. There have been 20+ students in the Intermediate Greek course this year. But smaller classes are definitely better.

I know many Classics majors and Ph.D. students, and most want to pursue teaching as their career. It seems to me that if one enters one of those fields that are not "useful," per se, one wants to go into acamedia because of what they are studying. I do know an anthro major exception, though. . .

i really admire people who go into fields that are "quirky" they are willing to risk not getting a job, or a great one.. for studying what they love.. while some ppl would rather be miserable and assure their success..

ditto.

"I come from a bit of a rubbish high school that didn't offer intro classes for such a subject."

I think anthropology classes are pretty rare for any HS. My HS is considered to be quite good and we don't have anything as cool as that.

ditto ditto

even though i am one of those people that will be assuring their success.
