Just saying... I've met so many awesome geeky-hippies at Wesleyan that it's insane. My fellow '09er friend just got a tattoo above her butt, of a human chromosome... However, while the physics department is good, it's definitely not what Wesleyan is known for.

"um, msd, why are you asking if you are already at MIT, according to one of your posts? Different person, or asking for someone else?"

You caught me.
I'm actually asking for my little brother, who is very smart and loves the atmosphere of MIT when he visits me. He's a junior and is now looking at schools, but MIT will be a bit of a reach for him because his grades are lower than mine were. I just wanted to help him out without explaining the whole situation to everyone. But since you asked, that's why an MIT undergrad is asking about MIT-like schools.

Hey.. This might help... Im pretty sure they actually have a "Nerd Rating" on here. Its a website that allows students to rank their colleges and stuff. If you cant find the school your looking for, im pretty sure you can add it.

hmmm...BROWN!!!! we're all nerds here and it's great!

cooper union

cooper isnt physics. It's engineering.
How selective are we talking?
Also, you must differentiate, do you want hippies or nerds? Very different.
Chicago has good physics. My (brilliant) math and physics teacher majored, mastered physics there.

woops.. that's right, but they're still nerds!

Deer springs college perhaps? no women or drinking...which is what you're looking for...but are you willing to get your hands dirty?

Reed has an excellent physics department. nods

"Deer springs college perhaps? no women or drinking...which is what you're looking for...but are you willing to get your hands dirty?"
yes to the hands dirty part, but since this is for my brother I think he would prefer coed. I think he'll do better with girls around to tell him to stop playing computer games.

Does Cooper Union only have engineering or does it also have decent physics department? Can you major in physics? Are the physics classes there any good?

Thanks

Deep springs is a 2 year school (not strong in science) thats probably harder to get into than harvard or MIT. Cooper does not offer a physics major. Reed is a good choice if your brother likes humanities and is intellectual. What is the difference between physics and engineering really? I know three middle aged guys who majored in physics and basically functioned as engineers including my math teacher. One of them, quite interestingly, majored in physics simply because he wanted to know how the universe worked, how God created the world.

I know physics is more theoretical and engineering more practical, but outside of academia, do they end up doing the same things?

WPI is pretty nerdy and it has good engineering/physics/etc

Olin College of Engineering.

Olin is insanely hard to get into, though...that's probably because of their free tuition deal

what is the range of SAT scores at Olin?

I wouldn't say it's insanely hard to get into. If you're into engineering, looking for a somewhat non- traditional education, and have stats that match up w/ other very competitve eng. programs, such as CMU, you would be a competitive applicant there.

Thanks to all - msd I'm in the exact same situation so thanks for posing the query! Out of curiosity, do you live at SH? Someone asked the mailing list something quite similar and I just remember having the same question for my brother :) Thanks!

I'd love a school of science nerds. Preferably those cute sciency girls with the black rimmed glasses lol.

Thanks to everyone for all the great advice. This has been one of the best resources I've found. If you have more ideas, please keep them coming. Otherwise, thanks a lot!
