Quit something I'm really good at, but dont like doing anymore?

I've got a problem thats really affecting my life. Im really good at chess, but I hate doing it. In my country, Im the best girl, and this autumn im going to represent my country in the olympics. Ive also played several international championships, world youth and european youth champs. Even though Im really good, I dont like doing it anymore. Im just not intrested in playing. Its never, ever, before a game like im excited or anything. Around christmas i took a break, because I was tired of it, and wanted to find out if I missed it, but I didnt. The only reason I continued was to give it a last chance . It didnt help, and im still not enjoing to play. I know there would be a lot of people disapponted if I quited playing, but now I want to focus on school (im a freshman this year) to become what I really want to: a writer (journalist) and photographer. Appreciate all opinions! :) what do u Think I should do? Quit or continue?

Could you do your absolute best at the Olympics, and then after, just call it “retirement” and move on to the next thing in your life. Or, if you really don’t want to play anymore, give the next girl in line the opportunity to play in the Olympics. I’m sure she would be thrilled. What we love doing as children often changes as we grow into adulthood. This is no different. Chess used your intellect and abilities in a good way; now you can challenge your intellect and abilities in other ways that excite you. Good luck. Maybe in a few years you will decide to teach another generation the game that you enjoyed and succeeded at so well…and then write about that.

Does playing chess give you some financial benefit? If you are getting tuition, or your education, paid for as a result of your playing, then I would say you have to look at like it’s a “job”. People don’t necessarily like their jobs (that’s why they have to be paid to do them). But if it’s a job, then you can look at it as something that you are only going to do until you have a job in the new field you are working towards - writing and photography.

Knowing that it will be temporary will ease the pain of doing something you don’t like, as well as giving you something to look forward to. :)
