Quitting an Extracurricular?

So I have finished applying and on my common app i wrote down that i would be playing varsity lacrosse senior year (i have been playing since freshman year) because at the time i actually thought i would play.

But ever since last year, the coach and i haven't gotten along and he really seems to not even want me on the team. even though i thought i would play this year, as tryouts approach, i really don't want to play.

I feel that if I do quit, it would be unethical for me to not inform the colleges i've applied to but it would seem odd that i'm quitting all of sudden after 3 seasons. Should I just suck it up because the season's only for 2 1/2 months or so? Any advice?

If you simply omitted yourself in this situation, I think there wouldn’t be a problem since this is not the kind of thing that decides an admission decision. Still, if reporting this update to colleges will make you feel better, then do it. There will be no harm by doing it, and they might keep the new data just for the record. No big deal.

thanks for the advice, but couldn’t it be seen as a lack of commitment if colleges are notified?

You didn’t really abandon the activities and lost commitment; you just sought to accomplish a greater priority with the available time you had. Make this explicit if you are contacting them.

thanks for the advice. i’ve decided to keep playing because i’ve been doing it for so long and its only for a couple of months.
