I'm applying to a couple top-tier/ivy league schools, including ED to the University of Pennsylvania CAS, and am debating whether or not I want to do the musical this year, even though I've done it since my sophomore year. My question is, will quitting an activity and starting a different one up negatively affect my chances for admission? Because, with it being an election year and all, I'd rather do political campaigning and volunteer work instead of the musical.

You’re overthinking it.

Do whatever you enjoy more. You will not be admitted or rejected anywhere because of one year more or less of participation in a school musical.
