Quitting My Sport to Keep My Job?

Before February is over I'll have to decide whether I want to keep my job, or quit so I can do track. I started working for this company in November as a seasonal employee, but just this week I was hired for permanent, so that would look kind of bad if I quit right after they decided to keep me. Plus, the pay is actually well above minimum wage, and I genuinely like working there. However, I feel extremely obligated to do track because of my coach and teammates' expectations of me. I'm no track star, but cross country is basically the most important thing in my life and track is an important cross training sport. All my friends run track and I know I'll feel completely left out if I'm no longer running with them. And to top it all off, I won the coach's award for dedication and determination in cross country so I know he'd be very disappointed in me. Really I hate track and would love to quit, but I can't help but feel I'd be disappointing everyone by doing that, and also ending up with no friends in the process. Not to mention colleges probably won't be happy to see I quit track. So what would you do?

Also in case it isn't clear, because of the required hours I can only do one or the other.

Is it possible for you to work out a schedule? Try to talk to your coach and boss and see what happens. If you can’t do that, then just go with your gut. And may I ask what type of job this is? If you need money, then stick with the job, there’s always time to hang with your friends. Also if you decide to quit the track team, but you have free time after school, maybe you can still practice with them for fun.

Talk to the coach about it. Explain that you got a job and are saving up money for college or whatnot and while you will continue to be a dedicated member of the xc team, it is not possible for you to run track this year. Explain that you will keep up running on you’re own and will not be behind when xc rolls around in the fall.

I work at Nike. But yeah I’m going to try to talk to my managers and see if there’s any possibility I can cut back hours but based on what I’ve seen with other employees in the past, I highly doubt that’ll work out. I think I’m just going to tell my coach that I’m really sorry I won’t be doing track but I’ll promise to start summer running immediately in June and hopefully that will be good enough for him.

Oh and ps I don’t really NEED the money, but its nice to have some extra spending money and having a job makes me feel more independent and stuff ya know?

“the pay is actually well above minimum wage”
“Really I hate track and would love to quit”

Keep the job. You might not think you need the money now but you’ll have to pay for college stuff somehow and even small amounts of money will help.
