I've been working at a local Rite Aid this summer. I started around June 22... I don't know if I should continue working there during the fall when I'm in college. I had told the manager during the initial interview that I would work in the fall, but I don't think it's worth it... I move in and start orientation on August 27 and the college is around a thirty minute drive from the Rite Aid store. What do you guys think?

Think about it this way....the company would have no qualms about firing or laying you off if it ran into bad times, so you shouldn't feel bad about quitting if you need to. I'd give him my two weeks as late as i could...plans change.

You'll probably be able to find a more convenient job on campus or near your campus.

You would use more money in gas than you probably would make. You need to get a job closer. Your manager will understand.

Unless you desperately need the money, I don't think it's a good idea to work the first semester of college. There's too much to adjust to.

I also think that there's a good chance that you can find a campus job or a job closer to campus.

I agree with those who suggest that you give notice, explaining that now that you've seen your college schedule, you realize it would be too difficult to work this fall. By your providing an explanation about your change of mind, the employer will be less likely to think that you misrepresented your plans when you applied. The manager's goodwill will be important for recommendations and possibly your returning to work there again next summer or during winter break.

Yeah, definitely too far away for a part time job. I'm sure there will be closer, better paying, work study campus jobs once you get there.

my usual commute for a part time job is 2 hrs

Sounds like it wouldn't be a bad idea to quit, it would be very easy to claim that high gas prices made it not worth the extra drive, I'm sure they'd relate to that.

Is there a Rite Aid closer to campus that you could work at?

Otherwise, definitely quit and find something closer. Plus, what is you manager going to do to you? The worst that could happen is that you'll be banned from working at any Rite Aids in the future, which isn't a terrible loss.

Yeah, I say quit. You want to enjoy your first semester, not spend it commuting.
