Quitting Wrestling Senior year?

Hey guys,

I was wondering if you could help me out with a difficult situation that I'm in right now.

I have done wrestling for the past 3 years of high school. I have lettered during each one of those years. During freshman year, I wrestled a few Varsity matches but ultimately could not defeat another opponent at my weight class. I trained really hard over the following summer, and during my sophomore year, I did really well. Went 30-15, won my area, and qualified for states. Junior year, however, was a different story. I was on J.V. for the entire year because I was behind two seniors who were both returning state placers. I tried to make Varsity as much as I could, but one of those seniors basically ran the team. He switched between weights every week (125 and 130), and I had to adjust my eating habits weekly to try and make the team. That season was frustrating as well because I felt like my coaches just blew me off in favor of other kids on the team. I also was not awarded the scholar athlete award at the end-of-the-season banquet even though I had the highest GPA (3.99) out of the junior and senior wrestlers.

I'm reaching the end of my junior year, and I'm really thinking about quitting wrestling my senior year of high school. I'm not only fed up with it, but I'm also not as passionate about it as I used to be. Wrestling is also very nerve-racking with weight cutting, and I often feel depressed during wrestling season. I recently went to my school's spring musical, and I'm thinking about doing the winter and spring musicals during my senior year in place of wrestling (one of the leads in the musical even recommended that I join). This isn't just something random either: I have a passion for film, and I've always been interested in acting. One of the other leads in that musical quit soccer his senior year after not making the team and ended up being an extremely talented thespian despite having never done it before. Will quitting a sport that I've lettered in for 3 years and have done during all of high school affect my college application?

...in other words, I think I have plenty of other activities that I invest time in and am dedicated to. Thoughts?

Now it says I’m a New Member and, to be frank, I’m not all that experienced with the whole college mumbo jumbo, but if you want my opinion, from the looks of things you have a pretty decent standing in terms of EC’s. It’s also impressive that you’ve participated in Athletics for that period of time. However, before you consider throwing in the towel I want you to think:

1) If wrestling is as ‘depressing’ as you say it is, then stop. No need getting worked up when you could devote your time to doing other things.
2) But two, it may just be a good idea to stick with wrestling but loosen up this year - show that you’ve stuck with wrestling for your entire high school career and that you have a few things to show for it.

Again, if it’s something you’re only staying in for College Apps, seriously reconsider - especially if it’s something you really don’t want to or feel like doing anymore.
