Quota for a school?

Yale typically lets in 1-2 students from my little high school. It has already accepted two athletes, for different sports. Does this mean I'm screwed?

^that sucks. my friend got in for lacrosse at Brown and the people who wanted to apply think they’re basically screwed

Colleges don’t have rigid admissions quotas. If multiple outstanding candidates present themselves from your school, Yale is not going to say, “Well, there’s this quota in place, and we have to honor it, and we’ve already taken two athletes from this HS, so which of these fabulous candidates shall we reject?” Colleges are not in the habit of taking actions that are contrary to their own institutional best interests.

wow, so athletes have already gotten acceptance letters?

genius URM Yale SCEA overload here at my school
be thankful it’s only one/two athletes

Many have gotten likely letters which, barring a major change in the applicant’s credentials, are tantamount to acceptances.

so likely letters only go out to athletes? =[

Y sends out about 100 Likely letters to non-athletes each year.

Megavortex: having individ school quotas isn’t good for Yale. It’s not done

they send out likely letters to non-athlete scea applicants?

^^No, not in the past. Academic likelies come out in the RD round.

Random thought of the day: I can’t imagine going to a school with lots of Asians. I’m one of 7 Asians at my school, and 6 of us are applying (have applied?) to Yale SCEA. And we mostly do the same activities/have the same grades/SAT scores. And obviously we can’t all get in. Yikes.

^LOL. I would love to see how that turns out. Can you PM if other asains got accepted at your school? That would be so unfair. lol

^yeah that SUCKS. Im the only chinese in my grade, but in the grade above me, the top by were chinese. valedictorian got into harvard, sal went to princeton, 3 went to duke on a full ride, 4 went to MIT, and 5 went to upenn

^***! Are colleges allowed to accept that many ppl from the same high school?

@plumdum:
Welcome to California. Of the top 10 of my class, 9 (including valedictorian and salutatorian) are at least partially Asian (two of us, including me, are only half). The four highest SAT scores and AP performances are from Asians. All of the academic competitions and major clubs (like NHS and Key Club) are headed by Asians, and the other leadership positions are also stocked primarily by Asians. The school is only 20% Asian, and they’re not magnet kids. We all live in the same neighborhood. It’s just how things shake out.

From what I understand, they don’t send Likely letters to SCEA non athlete applicants. 1) these super-outstanding applicants will definitely be admitted. So they’ll know on Dec 15 that Yale has a spot for them. What ensues for them (and the rest of the SCEA admits) is several months of heavy courting and wooing (to get them to accept). 2) the non-Athlete likely letter recipients are RD super-applicants (i.e. definitely will be accepted, definitely will be accepted by peer/competition colleges). Since Yale is bound to not give a formal acceptance until April 1, this allows them to put their “We REALLY want you” message in the minds of those kids.

@fresh101 I’m not sure about other schools, but I vividly remember that MIT admitted 14 people from my school in my freshman year. They’ve admitted 7 people each of the past two years. Most other schools (like Harvard, Princeton, UPenn) are much more conservative (between 3-5 each year) so maybe they have quotas? From my high school’s stats, it looks like MIT doesn’t have quotas though.

My uncle’s school had 8 go to Princeton so it’s not impossible to have that many for a HYP school

^I guess i can understand that. If those people have the same resources to use and equally the same stats and do everything the same as long as those activities are stellar, then it’s not entirely impossible for HYP to accept them all because of their similar amazing accomplishments, kind of like what christiansoldier was saying that was happening at his school. That’s like the biggest sentence ever :)

do you attend Mission San Jose?
