Quotes: Best of College Confidential

Violadad–

If you start up that didgeridoo thing again, I may die of convulsive laughter, in which case my estate might sue you for tortious interference with a boring day.

Oh noo-- don’t stop him, RedHerring. I might get to use my “venus envy” line again!

jym626—

Right you are!!! OK violadad. We’re ready for another chapter from UTaz, or whatever that place is called.

This is for the old timers- The Dad’s 12 days of Christmas as he waited for ED news.

Someone posted that they actually thought Sluggbugg and Curm were actually the same person. It took me awhile to realize they weren’t :)

Curmudgeon’s thread about taking his D back to Rhodes… it was priceless. From the shattered rear-view mirror, to the a/c-less ride thru Texas in August, to the empty containers rattling their way down flights of stairs, followed by the lids… truly priceless.

Tons of wisdom in the “support for LTS” thread.

If there are 3 lessons I’ve learned from CC, they are:

1) Love thy safety.

2) Love the kid you have, not the kid you wish you had.

3) Love the college that fits your kid, not the one USNWR loves.

And another for the oldtimers-- http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/40031-doodling-day-away.html</a></p>

By the way-- weird coincidence. The “urban moundbuilders” thread had its las post almost 5 yrs ago to the day-- 9/11/2003

theDad,
Thanks for starting the thread. Can’t think of anything but enjoy the posts Glad you are around. OT-- And Happy BirthdaY (I think yours is same month as mine. Or maybe your daughter or maybe I’m just old.
LA

Why can’t I read the original moundbuilders thread? When I click on jym’s link I get a page of code or something. Can anyone help? I also can’t seem to get to any of the “old” cc threads, although I could several months ago.

The disappearance of the Meta Thread for All of Us taught me to print the stuff out…

Why, oh why, did I open the essay title thread? Now I’ll be on here for hours!

I must take responsibility for starting the Meta thread (sorry, I must’ve been having a bad day that day :)), though I absolutely pin the notariety on violadad for making it really take off.

Garland, lovely to see you too!

I also remember a thread where a young girl who got into Yale was talking about not being able to afford health insurance and she had a lot of health problems. I remember a lot of the thread. Specifically what Blossom said to her sticks in my mind.

I wonder what happened to that girl. She might have graduated this year with my son. The thread brought out the stark differences between regular middle-class kids who go to a college like Yale and kids who can barely afford it and go there perhaps on 100% aid. Even small things like paying a few hundred dollars for medical insurance can put a wrench in their plans.

Achat, been a while- nice to see you too.

I’ve actually thought a lot about that girl also. Every time I read some politician’s boilerplate stump speech about the uninsured I think of her. It’s so easy to get caught up with what’s wrong with your life and your lazy bones kids and your muttonheaded boss and then a kid who has really overcome a terrible hand in life comes along and changes your perspective.

Anyway guys- my kid on the couch is self supporting in his field, has health insurance, I have no idea if he gets to work on time but since his boss doesn’t call his mommy looking for him I assume his post-college career is a lot more buttoned up than his high school years were. Have faith all of you. I’m not sure that those years of ESPN sports center and Simpsons did much for his brain cells but it is MUCH less stressful parenting an adult than a teenager. So hang in there!!! Last time he was home I said, “Do you need money?” and he said, “What for? it’s not my birthday” and I thought… well, this is a milestone of some sort.

So have faith. Once you boot them off the couch miracles can happen.

Hi Achat, good the “hear” from you. I remember very distinctly that young lady from Yale. Her screenname started with a C maybe, it was distinctive, something about candy, or something that made me think of sweets??? She was in a bad spot, as many truly poor students are, she had health issues, needed to see her own MD, plus her family needed her to make appointments and navigate the health system. She had a lot of challenges.

“Love the kid on the couch…” I needed to read that today.

Cangel,

You are good (hope that all is well in your neck of the woods)!! It was Candi1657 who was accepted to Yale and had balance problems with her healthhealth insurance and taking care of sick family members back home.

curm’s rules to finaid:

Question: What does efc mean/stand for?

Ans: Every friggin’ cent!

Yes, thanks to Curm, the account use to pay college bills is called The EFC Fund. Have shared that moniker with many unsuspecting parents of sophs and juniors, too!

I thought TheAnalyst’s comments in a thread about attending a reach school hit the proverbial “nail on the head”.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/511022-what-s-like-kid-attend-reach-school-7.html</a></p>

youdontsay-
Hows that reading of the college essay titles thread going?? Its a riot!!!

And over30-
I had that problem with getting code when accessing the “old” cc a while back. Do you use aol by chance? I had to clean out old “footprints” in aol to get it to work if you use aol- pm me and I’ll tell you how I cleaned out stuff. I think thats what did the trick. Not sure, but I think so.
