Seeing as these are usually in short supply, what position in a waitlist do you typically have to be in to have a good chance of getting on it?

I'm #2 for a South Asian R5A class with 17 seats.

In my opinion, I really depends on the students, the gsi and the class itself.

From personal experience - in one of my summer r1b class, about three, four student dropped after the first week because the reading were kinda difficult and overwhelming and the topic was rather uninteresting. I assume similar situations would also apply to regular school year, although the drop deadline would be later in the year, so you may have to be a little bit patient. Hope it helps!
