should i bring anything besides clothes on my back?
can i bring a knife? sewing kit?

You can bring a knife, as long as its not over 3 inches. You won't need a sewing kit; you'll get one. I'd bring chap stick, your own underwear, decent soap. (are you a guy or a girl?)

are you a guy or a girl?

You may want to bring your own toiletries. Pack two sets of flair for your uniform, you'll need it for white over gray and it's easier if it's already set up. Bring your broken in boots and low quarters. A phone card, a pair of scissors, a travel sized iron, maybe a pack of windex wipes for until you get to the CStore. Whatever's on the packing list. What did you take to Basic with you?

Not over three inches? Guess I am not bringing my Kabar... What is "flair" if I may ask? I've been told numerious times to just come dressed in civies with ID and thats all I will need. But then I've read otherwise in official material, which sometimes seems to contradict itself. Especially the boots authorization which states the program is highly recommended but not mandatory, but then later says all cadets must have hot-weather boots when they arrive.

ADA is prior service, he's at Ft. Bliss right now. I'm assuming he has a few ribbons and skill badges. If he's affiliated with his regiment, then he's got one of those doodads too.

Leave the K-Bar at home. They're not allowed, even after Beast. I have no clue what you're talking about with the literature, but I would have the boots with me and broken in before I arrived.

i brought all kinds of contraban. I brought a cresent wrench, booze hidden in a water bottle, a cd player, a switchblade... the begginging I had to turn it all in, and they were cool with it. but i get the feeling this place squared away, maybe thats an understatement. remember- i was 17 and I just got out of reform school. actually, i got released from juuuu-V when I was 16 and took my GED to enlist. but I got 99 on the ASVAB and they thought I cheated or something. At MEPS they asked me if my tatoo was a gang tatoo. But I cleaned up in the army and got some discipline- and now i'm headin' to west point. I was surprised they let me in. go'on with the O1-E. too hooah for prep school? well maybe they, dunno- cuz if i went to prep school i'd be too old for west point

No k-bars at west point? That doesn't seem to make much sense to me. You seriously brought all that? Switchblades are quite illegal aren't they? (Or are you being sarcastic?)

Wait...I am quite confused. You were asking what to bring, and now you state what you already brought??

Well, first off, KA-BARs are, traditionally, a Marine knife. Second off, why in the world do you need a seven inch knife at Beast? Are the bears in the woods going to come up to your tent and eat you? I'm assuming the total blade length is over three inches and those aren't allowed because you're living in the barracks and knives of that size aren't allowed in the Army, either. If it's three inches or less, feel free to bring it.

ADA was talking about what he took to Basic. Most of that is illegal to take to training. I don't think USMA would have a problem with the cresent wrench, but the booze, the CD player and the switchblade would be confiscated. I asked what he had taken to see if there were any parallels between reporting for Basic and reporting for Beast.

no- i seriously brought all that stuff. and i seriously went to the CYA california youth authority. at the beggining they had this trash can and they gave us one last amenesty to turn in everything. some guys had drugs. most of them got busted for drug test while in basic. by AIT, everyone had kinda chilled out. serious- i don't know how i got into west point. When I tried to get my commander to fill out the form- he laughed at me. i didn't even get a congress nomination or send in my HS transcript. oh- and i'm a minority :-) set aside and proud

bzzzt? did you ever go to the wendy's in el paso with no trash cans?

Yah, at like two in the morning because I was starving and drunk from...um...the Budda bar? The bamboo bar? I don't remember, total dive decorated in Goodwill chic, but cheap drinks.

What's the name of that great mexican place just south of the border that everyone goes to? With the courtyard and the fountains? Best chimichangas ever.

ADA you saying your CO wouldnt sign the release???

Flair as in like our ribbon racks?

...Do you think they'd have a problem with benchmade switch blades that are issued in some units? I mean, theyre legal for military or police officers and we're technically military

ADA, a congressional nomination is not required for enlisted, as they have, AFAIK, their own nomination process. Basically they have a set number of slots available. For a lot of academies, some of them even go unfilled due to insufficient interest.

Yes, flair as in your ribbons. Honestly, I wouldn't try and bring a knife I loved that may be questionable in length or style. You don't want to lose something like that over a misunderstanding.
