R mails from different colleges after taking a PSAT ,SAT or ACT selective?

After the PSAT,I got a lottttttttttt of mails from different colleges. My friends got them too. But....we got some from same college. some from different. I just wonder if it is depend on u score or it's just random....

Do you remember putting down your email / address and circling the little box that says :woud you like to recieve info about colleges...?

..that's where they're getting your name...it has nothing to do with you scores yet....the PSAT/ACT organizations arent allowed to give away your score unless you tell them too...

My son has received a lot of these letters (after junior PSAT). A lot of them seem pretty random, but some of them include letters praising his performance on the PSAT. Either they are just guessing, or they know something about his scores.

College Board provides lists of students with scores in certain RANGES, but doesn't reveal individual student scores. My son is getting a good variety of mail. He is getting far more mail from LACs and far more mail from colleges and universities in the Midwest (where we live) than he is actually interested in. Many colleges target much of their marketing to students in their own region. I think the PSAT questionnaires also allow students to indicate fields of interest for studying in college, which might explain why two students in the same town don't all get the same mail.

^^Right! Someone who marks down that they have an interest in undgergrad business or accounting won't receive much mail from those schools that don't have such programs.

I just wonder if they know something about our score?
or our ranges........

If a college bought a mailing list with your name on it, the college knows generally that your score is above [some low number not of interest to the college], but it doesn't know how your score compares to those of other students whose names are on the same mailing list.

They're really annoying. I must have gotten 40 this week alone.

And they ALL say the same exact thing "we are truly a different/unique college! you would be great here! we were voted number one college of the year by (insert a newspaper/magazine)! let me send you our free booklet about (insert college-related topic)"
