So my senior daugher got back her 3rd ACT scores and he was mad he got a 32! He previously got 33 and 31, his problem is he is a math/science person and wants to major in engineering. Her problem was the breakdown this time was 34 english, 34 math, 33 reading, 28 science (she was sick test day) I said its fine just send the 33 score to colleges (31 eng., 32 math, 34 reading, 33 science) Won't those scores be good enough to get into honors programs at most engineering schools? She also has gpa 4.3 unweighted and top 2% in class w extra circulars as well.

Yes, these scores are good enough for most engineering colleges, and honors if they also have an honors engineering. I think the question you need to ask yourself is what engineering colleges will also give her (him?) merit aid … those are great scores unless you’re looking at MIT, and then there are other factors to worry about as well (the competition).

I predict many good merit offers along the way.

p.s. you can go to any college and search their admissions pages to look for criteria for merit aid. Many schools post the details online, which include a cutoff for GPA and SAT.

Here is an example, which is Ohio State. As a female considering engineering there may be others as well (search for STEM, engineering).

Thanks SnowflakeVT, she w not be appplying to MIT but may stick w more state schools, OHIO State, Purdue, Georgia Tech, Penn State etc. also got commended national merit, but not sure if that will be good enough for scholarships either?!

thanks snowflake…she has gotten into sever good engineering schools and has gotten quite a bit of merit money, including OH St Maximus scholarship…now trying to decide is the biggest problem now…

i’m wondering why your daughter is male for the first part of that post…

& yes, a 32 is well above the average ACT score. very good for the schools you mentioned.

Ya he/she will be able to get into the schools mentioned:

Ok I think everyone is confused now.

???

Yeah I was thinking the same thing lol ^
But the 33 is a great score, and she (?) should be fairly happy with it. Plus she (?) got a 32.5 and rounded up which is always nice

Yes she is still a she…I must have been confused that day too?? Now it’s time to decide which is best school to go to for either Aero or Mech Eng.? And is it worth it to go to a more expensive school that doesn’t give merit aid or go to a not so great schoo honors program and have a full ride?? Any suggestions?

That depends on the specific schools in question, but generally you can do just fine by attending the honors program at good state school. How “not so great” is the school?

Just wondering how she could have a 4.3 uw GPA? Or is it on a 5-point scale (ie 4.3 out of 5.0 total). In our district all scores are unweighted (ie they NEVER weight the AP classes) so 4.0 is the highest possible unweighted GPA and would mean the student got a straight A in every class.

Good question about the weighted GPA on 4.0 scale being above 4.0 but our honors classes are rated higher but not our AP classes?? SO I think it’s with A+ in honors classes it can go above 4.0 unweighted…
