What would you recommend taking for the R1B requirement?

If Mike Larkin’s teaching anything, try to get into it. He’s a good teacher, wasn’t exceptionally difficult (at least in my experience), and earned boatloads of my respect over the course of the semester for which I had him.

Other than that, ratemyprofessor.com and myedu are your friends, as is ninjacourses.

Does rmp/myedu/etc give ratings for GSIs, because more likely than not you’ll be taught by one. Most R1B courses have their descriptions online, so I would recommend looking through them and picking one you like, since choosing the right department/GSI is like playing roulette. Even if a certain course (like German R1B) has been historically easy, you could get a hardass GSI for your semester.

You MAY be able to check by looking up the GSI on the department page and seeing if they have entries, but I don’t think so.

This is another benefit to looking for classes taught consistently by the same people (e.g. College Writing R4B, which by my understanding is something Larkin does every semester) - yeah, it may be a little more work, but it involves no real gambling.
