It all depends on the fraternity and the campus. There are some predominantly black fraternities and sororities, there are predominantly white fraternities and sororities. But there are some that don't care what race you are, if they feel you are a good fit for their house.

also there are sororities/frats that make a point of being multicultural. i don't think any of the greeks here care about race... but i'll find out more about that during rush xD

^^^Totally encourage those. Check out Zeta Sigma Chi, they pride themselves on being multicultural.
[totally not endorsing; my school doesn't allow fraternities or sororities, only honor societies - but if I went to a school that did, I'd have tried to rush them.]

It really depends on the campus. That's Greek Life rule #1.

As others have said though, there are numerous organizations that focus on certain racial or ethnic groups - from Jewish organizations like Zeta Beta Tau and Sigma Delta Tau, to the historically African American chapters of "the Divine Nine" to Asian interest and Latino/a interest groups, there's a whole gamut.

The historically white organizations in many parts of the country aren't concerned about race, but there are pockets (like the South) where it can and does matter.

The thing is, finding a chapter is all about fit, and you'll know if you belong in a chapter as you go through rush/recruitment.

Some more than others (assuming ur not looking at the ethnic frats).

bigredmed nailed it. if you're referring to racism during the rush process, well, it does exist in many schools in the South. However, even at these schools it's only limited to a few of the houses. There's always something to fit you.

As other stated already - depends on the campus and/or individual houses on campus.

As for the houses that are "multi-cultural" - some are open to anyone who fits in "personality"-wise, others have opened up grudgingly due to outside pressure.

Our house def. cares about race

Many of the national sororities are encouraging a more diversified membership... I'm not sure how each chapter handles it at the local level, but out here in CA I'm seeing more women of color and varied backgrounds in the traditional Panhellenic groups

Yes i think it does but it all dpends on the kind of fraternity you are looking for.

Any fraternity where race matters is not a fraternity I would ever want to be a part of.

I think it all depends on the frat. Well, if a fraternity/sororities is only white people, I don't think a black person would like to be in one of those. I don't know if I'm wrong, altough it's what I think

"Any fraternity where race matters is not a fraternity I would ever want to be a part of."

Agreed. I didn't join a frat to get into some sort of melting pot crap. While my frat doesn't officially discriminate against certain races, it's a huge factor (as well as sexual preferences...gays never allowed).

^I'm not sure if I understood this, but your fraternity does discriminate to an extent?

Yes mine does, and most do (whether intentionally or not). Frats that are actually open to EVERYONE are very rare, but do exist.

It also depends greatly on the specific character of the house.

My house was known as the "jock/meathead" house - they were more interested in whether you fit their "mold" than any particular race/ethnicity; out of a house of 85-90 members - 5-6 were Asian, another 4-5 were Hispanic and 1-2 were black (the lower no. of black members can be attributed to the heavy pressure put on black students to join the traditional black fraternities).

As far as I know none of the 14 fraternity houses at my college discriminate

doubtful .

^ where do you go to school at laser? im not asking to name your frat or anything im just curious what part of the country you are in.
