I wanted to write an essay about how North American culture led me to be ashamed of african-americanculture for a while and detach myself from it stereotypical image. Someone told me that this was a very cliched and generally bad choice for essay topics. Any thoughts on this?

There's no genuinely bad essay topic, just bad ways to write it. I can certainly imagine your topic working.

Here's a general rule with essay topics. Safe subjects usually lead to safe, decent, and middle-of-the-road essays. Interesting or daring topics tend towards the other two extremes: either fantastic or utterly boring/cliche and/or flat-out offensive.

Whats your opinion about this one? Which category do you think it would naturally fall in (topic-wise)?

I always heard it was better to be positive and it doesnt seem like a very positive idea. =(

bumped for bumpings sake
