race/ethnicity question

Youd be an idiot if you didn't put down hispanic. The first thing that comes to 99% of the populations mind when speaking of Brazil is Hispanic. Only put down white if you have white skin. If you even have a little bit of coloring though put hispanic, you're putting way too much thought into this.

Funny how this same question keeps popping up.

The OP is a Caucasian Latino – note: Hispanic and Latino are not races (Brazil, while not a Hispanic country is generally regarded as being a “Latino” nation).

About 50% of Brazil’s pop. is classified as white/Caucasian (btw, Brazil has a relatively large Japanese-Brazilian pop. – so they would be Asian Latinos).

Other South American nations, such as Argentina and Uruguay, are predominantly made up of Caucasians of European descent (90-95%).

Middle easteners have their own demographic. I am VERY positive about this. Most of the job applications and what not have their own category. Caucasian is usually for Europe in general.

People from Morocco are considered middle eastern as well.

I'm hungry. later.

^ Not for the US Census or college apps in general.

I'm as white as they get. I'll get hot red if I tan, I don't LOOK in the least bit Hispanic, that's the problem. I'm not trying to discriminate AGAINST putting down Hispanic, my debate was to whether it'd be ACCURATE in my application. I don't care for advantages/disadvantages, I just want to know my CORRECT ethnic classification.

As I understand it, and as hotpiece has reaffirmed, Brazilian people are not considered Hispanic. Hispanic implies of Spanish origin, and the Brazilian people, at least my family, are of Portuguese/generally European origin. My maternal grandma was born in Portugal, and my paternal grandma was born in Brazil.

My paternal grandma's parents were both born in Brazil as well, but their parents are Italian. My paternal grandpa is Brazilian, but his parents are German. My maternal grandpa is Portuguese.

So as far down as I can see, there are no HISPANIC ties in my family. I think that people are trying to classify all of S. America as Hispanic, when in reality Brazil is not a Hispanic country. With this being said, I think it's fairly safe to assume that I would classify as Caucasian.

Brazilians are not classified as Hispanic but they are generally considered Latinos (yeah, this gets confusing).

As for you're inability to get a tan - that has nothing to do with being Hispanic.

Spaniards are white Hispanics - so are Argentines of German, English, etc. descent.

I mentioned that because Kenshisan said: "Only put down white if you have white skin. If you even have a little bit of coloring though put Hispanic(...)"

I realize there is no correlation between white skin and being Hispanic :P Brazilians would classify under Latinos as Lusitanic. It does get a bit confusing.

Listen. I'm Indian. From the state of Punjab. I can possibly be Greek. I get mistaken for Greek and Italian and stuff.

How? Cause Alexander came over with his homies and ravaged our women for years. In fact I could also be British. Shiite, I can also be Moroccan or even Columbus cause he went to the Indies. YAGEDIT?

Whitey.

Tell them you were adopted and ya growed up bery hispanic, holmes.

MannyS, isn't it obvious at this point that it has nothing to do with skin color. It doesn't matter if he is white or brown, he's not going to put down hispanic because he believes something you obviously can't understand: he does not consider himself to be hispanic!!!!

and to the OP, for once I wasn't annoyed by this stupid little discussion. I just hate it when people log on to CC, knowing full well what race they have identified with their entire life and suddenly they have an identity crisis right before college app time and no longer know what ethnicity they are. It's ridiculous. But thanks, victorm, for recognizing that the race you've identified with your whole life is the race that you should put on your apps.

Theres a big difference in being Latino and being Hispanic. My grandfather is Afro-Latino but doesn't speak a word of Spanish. In this case, the OP could put down that he's Latino, but would be dishonest if he marks thats he's Hispanic.

You're hispanic. don't be ashamed. it's not worth it. you'll go your entire life hating yourself and one day you're going to wake up and be like, "man! why did i hate myself? I should have listened to MannyS all those years ago and not hotpiece101"

BE PROUD, ESSAY!

So, ALL northern africans are white? i call bs.

Most North Africans are not considered white. They are considered Caucasian though.

LOL, MannyS :P
Anyways, my problem with the Hispanic classification is not the BEING HISPANIC fact, I wouldn't feel ashamed at all. In fact, tomorrow is Brazilian independence day and sure enough I'm going to school in yellow, green, blue, and white. It's just that Brazil is NOT, in fact, a Hispanic country. After all the discussion I've come to the realization that ON FORMS AND OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS, the ethnicity most correct would be, indeed, Caucasian.

I've seen very plausible arguments towards this affirmation, but nobody has really made a decent argument against it.

they are caucasian. and caucasian doesnt necessarily equal white skin.

So ALL north africans are caucasian? I don't believe it.
Not all North Africans look like egyptians.

Yeah, obviously. Some North Africans are of primarily Sub-Saharan descent.

Saying that not all North Africans are Caucasian is kind of like saying that not everyone in Cuba is Cuban. It's like stating the obvious. Immigration, anyone?

Most North Africans are semitic but not all. A lot of e3b y haplotypes what is called proto semitic. That haplo exists from N.A. to Germany as they went a wandering 20 thousand years ago. Of course there are some negroid admixtures. Color has nothing to do with it either as you can develop black to white or vice versa over a period of about three thousand years from any race.Somalians though very black are mostly semites, and germans with e3b who are blond, been in Northern climes 10k years or more.

^^^That's interesting. What "subject" is that? Genetics? Anthropology?
