"Race/Ethnicity Unreported" or "Asian"

My last name is obviously Oriental... so if I do not enter the race bubble, am I still considered "Asian" or "Race/Ethnicity unreported?"

If the answer is "Race/Ethnicity unreported?" then what about this: if I also put down that my first language was Chinese and that the language spoken at home is also Chinese?

They are going to know you're Asian anyway. At least be proud of your heritage.

Yeah, if they don't figure it out from the rest of your app, the picture will be a dead give-away...

yeh i think if you put race/ethnicity unreported, your name is a giveaway so it doesnt matter.

it's a lose-lose situation.

i was just about to post the same thing, until i saw this thread

thanks!

haha it's sort of funny since hypothetically speaking.. your dad may be asian but your mom german or something thus the oriental last name..but the colleges automatically assume that you're full asian.

I think people are too paranoid about being turned away for being Asian. Is there any fact to back this up, other than hearsay?

it makes no difference. if you don't check it they will make the assumption you are either white/asian. The only boxes they look at is to see if you are a URM.

you won't be turned away if your stats are high enough...its not like they'll look at your app and go "oops he/she is an asian...deny"

i guess if you're on the border it might matter because then smaller stuff like diversity comes into play...but seriously if you gots the stats/ecs youre in...

Yeah, my feelings exactly. I doubt top schools would be able to keep their elite status by rejecting great candidates solely based on race.
