"Race" in College Applications FAQ & Discussion

I can’t think of some right off hand but I think that U Wisconsin-Madison, U Va, and Wash U may have some specifically targeted for African American, and Latino students. I’m almost sure there may be others but I’m not 100%.

Thanks for the suggested places to look, madville. I find it interesting that all the colleges you mention are state universities, which in general terms would have less latitude to treat applicants and students differently on the basis of race than privately operated universities. I’ll see what I can find out by browsing some websites.

I did the obvious Google search

[“Martin Luther King, Jr. scholarship” site:.edu - Google Search](<a href=“Google Search”>Google Search)

and looked at some of the pages of public universities that offer named scholarships commemorating Martin Luther King, Jr., the hero of the civil rights movement. What I find interesting about the published scholarship criteria is that most do not include any consideration of “race.” I think that may be because the colleges whose pages I looked at are mostly following correct legal advice. A typical scholarship requirement for an M.L.K. scholarship is for the student to have demonstrated community service (a fitting requirement for a scholarship with such a name) or to write an essay explaining why Martin Luther King, Jr.'s example was inspiring to the student. I think that is a very appropriate way to honor King’s life.

Providence is one and quite a few LAC’s with different names attached, I think Holy Cross, not just Martin Luther King, there are many for different nationalities also. Twins too…you can’t get too crazy about it, they have a right to offer what they want.

Referring to colleges, colleges operated by state governments have to follow the equal protection clause of the fourteenth amendment to the Constitution. Privately operated colleges, depending on various other applicable laws, may have more scope to treat students differently on the basis of race. Relevant court cases are linked to from [post #15](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1060814781-post15.html) of this thread.

A link to Wisconsin minority based scholarships;[Student Financial Services : Scholarships Fostering Diversity](<a href=“Office of Student Financial Aid – UW–Madison”>Office of Student Financial Aid – UW–Madison)

At U Va The University offers a number of privately endowed need-based scholarship and grant funds administered by Student Financial Services. Most of these awards were established by individuals or foundations and are intended for students who meet specific criteria. (one or more of these may be minority or underepresented based IIRC).

Coincidentally, at U Va, in the CDS, race is a significant factor in admissions. Almost as much as scores and GPA. It has the highest grad rate for AA at a public school so it was one my DS considered in his college search. He was accepted and the FA was exceptional. Although my DS chose another fine school, and his example anecdotal, U Va proved to me that they talk the talk and walk the walk when it comes to making an elite public education acessible and affordable for minority students.

For Wash U, I was mistaken. I thought the Ervin & Rodriguez scholarsips were minority based. They are scholarships that are for students that bring diversity so to speak.

My school, Georgia Tech, claims in its CDS to not consider racial/ethnic status at all. Some may think that means we don’t care about diversity. They are mistaken.

We’re first in “granting engineering master’s degrees to African-Americans and tied for third in producing Black engineering doctorates.” ([Source]( http://www.diverseeducation.com/artman/publish/printer_6326.shtml)) Our black graduation rate is above seventy percent. ([Source]( http://www.mindingthecampus.com/forum/2008/05/black_success_black_failure_1.html)).

I see this as consistent with our school’s history. We were the first university in the Deep South to peacefully integrate. We’re a true affirmative action school; we treat applicants without regard to their racial/ethnic status. I’m very proud of that.

Thanks for the further examples of public universities.

I’m mulling whether I should share another personal story, about my state university, that has some bearing on how I think about these issues.

Denison is great with FA regardless, but the minority scholarship is quite noteworthy as is Rice’s. DS was offered great minority scholarships at both institutions. Vanderbilt has some as well IIRC. Miami U comes to mind as well. Acknowlegement of minority status can be huge when applying especially if FA is a consideration.

I can understand why some whites and other ORM’s may be reluctant to state race or ethnicity at these elite schools. Frankly the numbers are huge for many similar type applicants, and in not stating ethnicity, it may slightly help in getting accepted in some of the more selective schools.

I see J.E.M.'s list includes a lot of private colleges, especially LACs, and quite a few third-party scholarships. Was this copied and pasted in a way that removed web links? It would be interesting to look at the details of the criteria for these scholarships.

^^ I did not deliberately remove the web links but apparently some of them only work on the original site - that function did not transfer to here. (Apologies for my techie inadequacies :o )
However, if you go to the original linked site such as [Scholarship Search, College Scholarships, Grant Services!](http://www.financialaidofficer.com/scholarship_search/minority_scholarship.php) you can click on each listed link and it will take you to the particular program with scholarship info.

Re public schools, many do seem to have designated money for minority scholarships, but you have to look at the individual school to find them. On the Binghamton University (State University of New York) site [All University Undergraduate Scholarships](http://www.binghamton.edu/bingfa/all.htm), for example, I found the following that did not come up in my searches:

**Minority Scholarship Fund **Students who demonstrate high academic achievement, have financial need, and are from underrepresented populations (African American, Asian-American, Latino-American, or Native American).

David A. Niermeyer Scholarship for African-American Students African-American and Asian-American students who are in good academic standing with proven financial need.

[Report on Suspected Malfeasance in UCLA Admisssions and the Accompanying Cover-Up](<a href=“Academic Stuff”>Academic Stuff)

While I do think that UCLA intentionally admitted more black students, I do believe that Groseclose’s specific claim is unsubstantiated and biased.

This is simply a side effect of trying to impose values on a university that clearly does not want them and is not doing anything malicious. Ward Connerly’s statement that the university should say that reporting race will be grounds for denial is absurd. While I respect AA opponents in general I cannot respect this man.

What is the current California law on the subject of admission to the UC campuses? Does anyone have a link to a statutory citation at hand?

Was this opinion reached after reading [Groseclose’s paper and his supporting items](<a href=“Academic Stuff”>Academic Stuff)? What specific items in the paper detract from his argument?
