Should I put Asian or not? I think its killing me on applications...since my stats are lower than the usual Asian. Would I be better off putting no race? Any advice? My last name is a common Indian name though. This ****es me off. I got deferred from my SAFETY school...I still can't comprehend it.

Indian as in Indian Subcontinent..which is in Asia which fits into the Asian box. Its not a good thing for college apps. Trying to decide whether I should put it or omit.

wow..and I looked it up at dictionary.com and found:

"Anthropology. Of or being a major human racial classification traditionally distinguished by physical characteristics such as very light to brown skin pigmentation and straight to wavy or curly hair, and including peoples indigenous to Europe, northern Africa, western Asia, and India. No longer in scientific use."

I'm guessing I'm Caucasian haha. I guess this won't hurt me then.

Your considered a minority...I mean....forget the dictionary,,,,america is dominated by whites...hence unless you have scores that reflect a typical white candidate your in for a big mistake...also ....if you get called for an interview....youd be considered a liar!! Not something you wanna do....

This is not an anthropological question, it's a legal/political question. Indians are Asians according to the rules established for data collection purposes by the US Government's Office of Management and Budget. Colleges are asking this question because of their responsibilities to the Federal Government to ensure non-discrimination in their programs, and for the sake of their own institutional analyses.

Up to you whether you answer it or not. You are not disadvantaged by putting Asian in. It could mean your Hmong or Thai or Vietnamese. It is also quite likely that admissions people will not see that information anyway. Even if they did, it would be illegal for them to make a decision based on your racial background. I think that the whole concept of discrimination against Asians is more of a theory than an reality. In the years I worked for the Office for Civil Rights, US Department of Education, I never saw a complaint by an Asian applicant against colleges in DC, VA, or NC. I have seen them in New England, but the candidate was clearly inferior.

I see...hmm they claim they don't make their decision on it, but who's watching. They are behind closed doors...they can do anything basically. Thanks for the help though.

I say you check other and put indian..as for a typical white candidate..I met typical "college candidate"..which is predominantly whites--> b/c they make up the majority of persons applying for college and therefore SATS and gpa averages are a reflection of them...

asian for sure. some people say it works to your disadvantage but the truth is, you are still a minority so definately put asian. i highly doubt it will hurt you in any way.
