What are the race-relations at Duke like? Does any particular group tend to self-segregate? I really value the diversity (in regard to race, at least according to percentages) at Duke and I want know if that is truly reflected in life on campus.

From my limited experience, I’ve seen a lot of Asians who self-segregate, in particular international students from Mainland China/Taiwan/Singapore/Korea, etc. I guess it’s the shared experiences of living in a foreign country plus the common language that draws them to each other. This is not saying that every Asian will always be around other Asians but I’ve been around a lot of those groups. Or maybe it’s because I’m also Asian that I see this more often. W/e you get my point I hope.

I also want to say that these groups are not usually intentionally exclusive. These people often also have other friends but when they get together they often use their native tongue and that makes it harder for say a white person who doesn’t speak Korean to get in on that.
